Cambelt life 1.9TDI non PD

Featured Replies

Hi

o3 reg 1.9TDI, non PD, "old fashioned" engine with 110BHP. 41k on clock. Checked with Local garage, suggested cambelt at 40k complete with tensioner kit. Skoda garage originally said 60k, then when told non-PD suggested 100k

Anyone know for sure?

I don't know the mileage answer but VAG now stipulate a 4 year maximum life for cam belts - which means yours is due this year regardless of mileage.

The service book in mine, 2002, non-PD says 80,000 miles. No mention of age. Mine was done at 81,200. Thatw as its first.

The service book in mine says 90,000 km, which in Skoda terms means 60k.

Previous owner had a service at 56k, but left the belt until 82k?!

I'd say 80k or 4 years, whichever sooner.

The PD belts are under a lot more load due to driving the injectors too. :)

My A3 with that engine was scheduled one at 60K miles.

I was told 80,000 miles by all the local Skoda dealers, and by all the local independant garages too.

I have just had mine done yesterday, the mileage was 80,120.

When It was taken off, the mechanic that did it, said it looks like it has been done before, but not been put in the book.

The pullies were all tight, and had to playin them, and the belt was in very good condition.

But still, I wouldn't ever leave it much more than 80,000 miles or 4 years, as I have seen the damage it did to my father in laws car when his went, and took the engine with it.

When I had mine done 2 years ago , Skoda were saying check at 60k , replace at 80k

I am changing mine (110 TDi, 2001) every 60k miles. it was done just before I bought it about 2 years ago, and I'll be doing it again in about 7k miles time when it hits 120k

I was told 60k/4 years, and that you need to do the belt and tensioners.

I'd also do the water pump and change the coolant at the same time.

IIRC JKM on here quoted me

I've always had my car serviced at the Skoda dealer when its become due. I trusted them to know when it should be changed. Funny that they never ticked the box for belt change, but told me last service they'd do it next time (120,000). In the mean time it went, and I'm a lot poorer for it.

If you requested the work to be done and they advised against it, then I would put a complaint into skoda customer services and the dealership.

Won't get your car repaired for free, but might get some of the costs covered, if you were very lucky you might end up with parts paid for which would make a reasonable dent in the cost.

Your car is subject to cambelt replacement at 80000 miles as it was registered between 05-2001 and 04-2002. If it was an earlier car it would have been 60K and a later car would be 100K.

Cool, got another 25k left then.

I know people will say "oh, I change mine at blah blah anyway", but the same people will probably tell me that I shouldn't leave the oil in there for 28,000 miles either. I say, I'm not arguing with the manufacturer, especially if it saves me time and money.

It's not an interference engine though, is it? :sofahide:

I think you will find it hard to find a diesel that isn't an interference design due to the high compression ratio needed.

I know that the TDI 110 is 60 or 80k and certainly not 100k.

No I'm not one of the don't use variable servicing and 27k between changes was fine for me.

Although obviously you could get one with a chain rather than a belt ;)
