Someone lent me their Satnav

Featured Replies

to use in my 53 reg Fabia Comfort. Of course the only plug in is under the handbrake, so the wire was trailing up to the dash and getting in the way. Fibally the plug was disturbed and the apparatus had to be reset. Are there workrounds or (extension) kits to solve this design defect on the Fabia?

You can buy extension leads or you could hard wire it in.

Hi, I bought a 3 socket box from Halfords and mounted it under the dash below the small cooler box to the right of the seering wheel. It is well out of sight, and has a lead long enough run hidden above the underdash tray and tucked under the centre consol. It exits between the drivers seat and the consul so is easy to plug in and out.

If you go for the more expensive one it has the advantage of having a circuit that measures the battery voltage and cuts power to the socket befor the battery on the car runs flat.

I leave the phone/ipod/Tomtom lead plugged into the socket and hide the lead in the cooler box when not in use.

How sad am i writing all this about a power socket extension ?

Very good question and excellent reply PAArsko, ive been thinking about how to get around this problem for a few days. I have my sat nav, phone charger and snooper plugged in some times and its a right old mess of cables.

I was thinking of fitting some cig elements in one or two of the spare buttons on the dash but decided against it as it doesnt look right. My next option was similar to what you have done. It looks like thats the way forward. Thanks again for letting people know your solution.

I've done a similar thing to PAArsko, using an after market cig lighter plug and socket from Maplin with some power cable running from the existing lighter socket, under the drivers seat then tucked into the door trim and up to the storage drawer on the drivers side. My satnav power cable sits tucked away in the drawer with no trailing cables.

I did a similar thing to all of the above.....bought a 3 way adapter from Halfrauds and mounted it in the front ashtray using it's sticky pad. The wire goes under the centre console to the main cig lighter where it can be unplugged or switched off. Also means I can unplug it to use the main cig lighter for bigger stuff like the tyre pump etc as the adapter only has a 3A fuse in it......plus the wire is pretty thin.

Mine has an extra cig lighter socket in the centre console storage bit below the stereo!

A couple of pics of my Octy II with a four way extension (Halfords IIRC).

Not the neatest solution (guess you need hard wired for that) but it gives multiple sockets and gets them closer to the dash area than the one near the handbrake.

At the end of the day what you do depends on how much time/money you want to spend, and/or how good you are electrically.

I like the one in the cubby hole idea

Blimey Andy - what are you running in there, a small office? A 4-way?! :D

But as you ask....

  1. Bluetooth GPS Receiver
  2. Old Nokia phone with Tom Tom Mobile
  3. Snooper
  4. And spare for current Nokia phone or blue-tooth headset

I bet that lot is costing me a couple of mpg
