help gearbox woes

Featured Replies

had whine in 5th gear (severe) checked gear oil level and thought it needed a bit of a top up but may have overdone it. fixed bits back, drove round block. now when clutch depressed no noise but as lift foot to engage get a rattle n grind sound. 5th still squeals. have i now buggered it all up? is it still same to drive in 4th or will all seals pop:confused:

I remember reading on a US VAG forum somewhere that pre-87 gearboxes can use an extra 100cc (put through the speedo cable opening) after oil trickles from filler hole, and that somewhere else that VAG suggested under-filling the oil by 100cc to aid in smoother shifts. Don't quote me on this one tho' - we need a comment from a master tech first.....
