'05 vRS - tappetty

Featured Replies

I'm not having a good couple of days. Got not one, but two nails in one of the back tyres about 5 and 7mm from the edge so that needs replacing. :(

This morning the engine is sounding very tappetty for want of a better phrase. It's past the usual diesel clatter and sounds sort of Early 90's Ford Escort with 110 thousand miles bad. Checked the oil - levels are all OK. The car is due the 2 year service in around 4 weeks, but has only done 5000 miles in the last year.

The car seems to drive OK. Any ideas? Not sure if it warrants a call to Skoda Assist - the nearest dealer is 20 odd miles away.

I posted the same problem when I had mine - it only sounded like that if I hadnt used it the whole day and switched it on at night, or something similiar. It went away in the end though :ne_nau:

mine was always noisey as hell when cold..... I wouldn't worry about it.....

The noise was there most of yesterday and finally went away after a motorway run of about 15 miles to a nice pub for last nights footie. It's not the usual cold TDI clatter but definate mechanical tapping from the top end of the engine that increases with the revs. It's a bit like the noise most 1.8Ts make for a few seconds when started from cold or an old Ford HCS lump.

Also spotted that the rear securing bolts for the engine cover has fallen off which might not be helping matters.

She's not getting much use now as since a change of jobs I'm walking to work - 1200 miles since beginning of February

I'll get Skoda to take a look when she's in for the 2 year inspection.

I just had the opposite today - driving home after a night shift - It was 16oC so the engine didn't take long to warm up and notice how quiet it was running i.e. Temperature can be a big factor in how tappetty our engine's sound...and the 77mpg indicated was nice as well!

Hi,

When you sent your car in for its service magicboy did you get any answers about what the tappetty noise was?

The reason I ask is that I also have an '05 VRS and I've recently experienced the same symptoms as you on and off. It only seems to happen when I come to start the car from cold and it's not been used for a day or so, usually it takes until the car is warm to go away but it has taken longer on some occasions. Its definitely more of a metallic tapping noise than anything a normal diesel would make.

I wondered if it could be the alternator?

Could anyone please advise on the best course of action? I've not contacted the garage yet but, it was in for its 40k service last weekend so if there was anything obvious I'd have thought they would have said.

Thanks,

Mike.

Thats a bump and a half.

Wonder if he can remember.

Well I thought I'd save the kittens by using the search button :), and I think its best to make use of the old treads instead of creating duplicates.:D

Mike.

I wouldn't worry about it, mine sounds like a three way cross between an asthmatic gorrila, a dustbin half full of old nails on a trampoline and a second world war 3 ton bomb haeding towards earth...

I'll worry when it actually either coughs its guts up, spills its innards over the road or explodes...:D

That's a hell of a bump. I've drunk beer in the intervening 18 months so my memory is a bit hazy.

IIRC they checked it and said nothing was wrong that they could find and no fault codes. It was a one off and it's not happened again since.

Hydraulic tappets pumping up, probably. They take longer when the oil is colder & thicker.

Hi,

Thanks for replying :) Glad you've not suffered any problems since, I hope I'm as lucky.

Anyone else's advise or comments would be much appreciated.

If I get a definitive answer from the garage I'll make sure I post a reply just in case someone else gets the same symptoms.

Thanks again,

Mike.

Couldn't put it better myself!!

Weather back when I opened the thread was a nice hot spell which was what had me concerned at the time...

Oh and LOL at Mr Grumpy! My Furby is usually garaged and leads a sheltered existence, however I was staying elsewhere last week when the snow hit. Sounded bloody awful when started from cold at minus 6C after standing for a couple of days...

My vrs can be a bit tappetty. It's not as noticeable after a long run, but you can still hear a light tappetty sound / rattle from the engine on light throttel between 2500 and 3000 rpm. I did bother me at first as it was uncharacteristic of the car since i had it (was used to the usual diesel clatter). I'd also done over 13,000 miles between the last oil change, plus the independant garage i used flushed the engine out before putting fresh oil in which is bad for the top end (don't use engine flush on pd engines).

I'm sure the above has contributed to top end rattle, but to be fair it's not that noisy.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you - I'm with Mr Grumpy on this one :). As has already been said, it will be noisier during the colder weather and will quieten down once the engine has got to temperature. If in doubt have the oil and filter changed for peace of mind, will be doing this myself next week.

13k is a bit long past the service interval for the oil.....although, I though that they just put in the long-life PD spec anyway?

Yeh I did leave it a bit late on that occasion - the only time it's happened since I've owned it though, normally change after 8/9k.

It's 10k intervals normally for oil changes on this pd 130 motor with VW 501.01 spec for the oil.

Wouldn't recommend anyone going any longer than 10k between changes.
