2.0 FSI mpg and driving style

My old Mk1 1.8T liked being drive hard (aceleration and pull away/rolling traffic etc), and infact the harder style seemed to give me satisfying mpg returns.

For the last 2 tankfulls my mk2 2.0 FSI seems to drink fuel no matter how it's driven, yet the harder style makes the needle plummet. Combined urban seems to be only about 27mpg (not been closely recording, so based on Maxidot reading)

Is this a normal trait of the FSI engine over the 1.8T, or simply a bad tank of fuel?

Engines only done 2k, and I know my 1.8T took upto 5k to loosen, but the mpg figures werent anywhere near as worrying as I'm getting lately.

Interestingly when I had a test drive in a 2.0 fsi, I was shocked by the poor fuel consumption on the outward journey, but on the return it improved dramatically, so perhaps the trip computer is faulty.

When I get mine in late summer, I'll hope for the best!

I don't think it is faulty. When I have only pottered around town for a few days, doing journeys of about 400 yards, the computer shows me on about 20 mpg.

When I set off on a run, doing steady fast speeds, the computer constantly reassesses mpg until, within about 20 minutes, it is well into the low 40's.

I thought that was only true on the #1 mpg (current journey) where as #2 was total (more like actual used). That was how it worked on my Mk1 computer.

I know the real time mpg on my Mk1 would jump wildly. 999mpg one minute, 2mpg the next. Not played with my current mk2 computer, as I've left it showing range. Might try real time and see if it still has this jumpy characteristic of the Mk1.

But computer mpg reading aside, why does the FSI engine hate hard/agressive driving? I thought it is meant to be more fuel efficient?

I think the car computer alters alot but i seem to average at least 30mpg with fast driving combined with town. Ive done just over 3,500miles my vrs is 18months old but i changed to the super unleaded fuel about 4 refills ago seems to make the car do more mpg and get the same speed at about 1000rpm lower i think its worth the extra 4p a ltr or so

Im sure on a long trip at 60mph would be getting upto 40mpg

My Mk1 1.8T, running the normal 95 ron premium unleaded did around 46mpg on motorway work when I used it for work.

Made it wrong Staines to Haverfordwest, and near enough home before needing juice again - and that's 500 miles.

I used to make money on my mileage allowence, where as the others went for luxury 3l v6 thirst machines and it cost them a fortune.

If I did over 1000 miles a month on business, my Mk1 cost me nothing to own or run (out of my own pocket) at all. :cool:
