10w40 oil!!!!

Featured Replies

I just got my vRS serviced at a local garage (for the first time), and looking at the receipt they used 10w40 oil. I know that this is wrong, but my question is how wrong?

After alot of talking, telling me that their computer told them that it is the right/equivalent oil, blah blah blah. Anyway they are going to change the oil, possibly tomorrow (when the fuel filter arrives, they were 'sent' the wrong one!) or next week.

So can I used the car next week, if the oil doesn't get changed tomorrow?

I really need ammunition/facts to throw at them tomorrow when I go in.

Well it isn't the recomended oil for a PD engine so how wrong do you want to get?

I know its not recommended, but will it do damage?

I really need the car next week, do I insist they must do it tomorrow or, as they say, will it be "ok" for a week?

I'd get them to do it asap, its thier mistake.

Begs the question why get your car serviced by someone who obviously doesn't know the cars or even care about them.

IIRC the PD injectors are lubricated by splashing of the oil on them.

If this is right then the wrong oil will mean your injectors would not be correctly lubricated and might fail prematurely.

I wouldn't drive it unless it has the right oil in it myself.

I was told that they did know the cars, with staff from a former Skoda dealership. My car sure won't be going back there.

BTW do you mean oil filter rather than fuel filter?

Surely it would be better for them to change the oil drain the existing oil filter, then fill it all up with the right oil and then change the filter and top up the oil, than it would to run it on the wrong oil.

No, fuel filter was supposed to be changed as part of the service, but they were 'sent' the wrong one. I would have insisted on having the oil changed then and there, but the workshop was already locked up.

I don't really know anything about oil, just that 10w40 is wrong. I don't know enough to argue when a mechanic tells me that this wrong oil won't do any damage. So what I really wanted to know is will this oil cause damage? I've got no intention of leaving it in long term.

I wish I had booked in at a dealership, it wasn't really any dearer just inconvenient as this garage, which was recommended to me, is right around the corner.

How many miles has the car done?

The 10w40 oil is not the right grade to lubricate the camchaft and PD injectors sufficiently.

60,000 miles total, mile and a half since the wrong oil went in.

When was the fuel filter last done? Should be every 40k. You are also probably due a cambelt.

  • Author

TBH I don't know when the filter was last done, 40,000 I assume.

They did the cambelt today.

So I don't actually need the missing fuel filter, I just want to get this in the past asap.

Heres hoping they did the tensioner as well then and replaced the mounting bolts ;)

Yeah the fuel filter shouldn't be needed.

As ross said, do make sure they did a whole cambelt kit and not just the cambelt. There is a thread in the octy section showing what happens when they don't.

Same goes for the bolts or your engine might say hello to the floor.

They fitted a K055569XS belt kit.

Means nowt to me mate, but I have to say that doesn't look like an OEM part number.

I'm sure Ross will know more however :)

So can I used the car next week, if the oil doesn't get changed tomorrow?

I bloody well wouldn't.

The PD-Specific oil is needed because the PD pump-injectors present a high load the the camshaft, so the oil has to be correct to prevent camshaft wear.

The thing is, PD oil isn't even expensive from the likes of GSF.

Nope that aint a genuine part number for the belt.

Its a Gates kit.

Googled the number and its a belt and pulley kit for an audi 1.9tdi, so I guess that's ok.( Or should that be I hope that that's ok)

Have you got the receipt and if so does it mention new engine mounting bolts on it?

If not then they need to do that as they are single use stretch bolts IIRC.

I have no idea on the quality of the gates kits so can't comment there, however I sure as hell wouldn't drive the car any distance at all, never mind for a week.
