Need to buy PD oil....

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 40k service is du in a couple of k so I'm just getting the list together of what needs doing before I take it to my local garage (non Skoda).

I know I need 4.5 litres of 15w40 PD compliant oil (types listed on the main page) but I don't know where's best to buy from or how much to expect to pay?

What do the Skoda dealers sell and how much do they charge?

The reason I ask is that a mate of mine with a Passat TDi 130 gets his oil from the VW dealer and it's cheaper from there than anywhere else, plus he's guaranteed to get the right stuff.

Otherwise I know that the following needs doing at 40k after a brief search:

oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter

In addition, I'm going to have the brake fluid changed as it appears not to have ever been done according to the service book, even though it's been done at a main dealer all the time before I got it (car is 3 years and 5 months old). Doves in Cardiff apparently. Are they known to skimp on servicing?

I thought brake fluid was every 2 years? Also, I can find no mention of the coolant being changed. Is that every 2 years also alongside the brake fluid?

Thanks,

Chris.

You want 5w40 not 15w40.

The VAG PD oil in the white can is good, or you can opt for the cheaper Quantum PD oil (5L) if you going for main dealer stuff. Should be around the same price regardless of which VAG brand.

The dealer may not have skimpped on the brake fluid, the customer may wel have declined it. No interval on coolant change though.

Sorry my mistake....5w40. :D

Any ideas on how much a dealer would charge for 5 litres of PD oil?

Also, if there is no specified interval on coolant, how often is sensible to change it? On my BMW it was bi-anually (even though I drained it much more often than that). I might just end up doing it myself to save on

Unless there is a problem I wouldn't change it, no need.

Interesting. I just read that a while ago the constant use of coolant makes it more acidic and thus degrades the head gasket slightly etc. Mind you that was on a petrol engine. It's to do with electricity dispersion through the block as an earth. As it discharges through the coolant is causes it to become more acidic and thus causes corrosion of the HG.

Either that or it'll gradually collect crud from the engine block and radiator and become more sludgy over time?

I'm just looking now at prices for PD oil on Opie Oils etc and it would appear to be about

I think the above statement is true for etheleyne glycol antifreeze and one of the reasons VAG stopped using it around 1996.

Millers XFE is semi-synthetic. If you want a fully synthetic, try Opie Oils for either Castrol or Fuchs 505.01 oils. You need 5 litres: a refill takes 4.3 litres and I find the odd 700 ml is enough for topups until the next 10K service.

I was tempted to get Millers XFE - but semi synthetic

so bought Carlube for approx

Aha. Ok, that makes perfect sense. Thanks mate.

Ok, so in terms of oil, the Millers XFE is a semi. What oil do the dealers give for

I was at a local VW garage today in my lunchbreak (won't say which one, to avoid a rush)

I asked how much the oil for PD engines was - he said they have a lot in just now, so could do me 5 litres for 19.99

sounds v. cheap - it will be right stuff, won't it ?

(I could well be making a return visit tomorrow lunchtime)

Sounds good for 5 Litres like just be sure it is for PD engines and is the right standard 505.01.

Bought 5 Litres of Miller's XFE - PD about a month ago that was

The oil from the dealers is the Quantum stuff. I think it's a semi synthetic and so it's a toss up between that and Millers XFE-PD when the time comes. It'll all depend on cost.

well, I went back, and got even more confused. I told them it was a 07 car, so they started going on about extended life oil, which apparently is what is put in newer VW's and (of course) they weren't certain what should be in a new Skoda.

They showed me 2 bottles:

A golden one, which was the newer oil - i noticed it said 5w-30 on it, think it said 505.01 as well. Was Castrol

and a white one, which said 505.01 and also 5w -40. Was a VAG branded bottle

Neither of them had the part code I had seen in the "sticky", but I'm guessing it's the white one, right ?

Fair play to them, they were reluctant to sell me "the wrong thing"for my car, without either of us knowing exactly what oil was in it already. And I only want it for top-ups when needed. it's not urgent.

The golden one will be fully synth for use in variable servicing intervals. As yours is fixed at 10k then just go for the VAG branded stuff. It's the right one for your car.

  • 2 months later...

Autobits in Farnham, Surrey will do Millers XFPD for

I paid
