Mileage getting high....

Featured Replies

ok today on the way to work my mileage went past 53,000 which means that i have done nearly 40,000miles in my fabia since i got it nov '05 so i was thinking about ways to keep the mileage from going up at the rate im going.... i travel nearly 60 miles a day to get to work and back so that ads up to over 13000 miles a year just for commuting

option 1 would be to use public transport on my comute but the train is too early and the bus is too late so its not convinient

option 2 is car sharing but i work for a removal/shipping company and most of the drivers end up away all or some of the week so thats not suitable

option 3 is to buy a 2nd car with long T & T which i would need to insure so would need to be something cheap (under

You can ride a 125 cc scooter on a car licence i think. By the time youve bought and insured (and ran) another car , it will be costing you a lot of money , maybe more than you would spend if you just continued to run the Fabia?

I guess the main question is why you are looking to save miles on the Fabia. If it's to save money, then I can't really see a cheaper alternative (how much will a second car cost to buy, run and insure!).....

After doing a CBT

move nearer to work :D

I don't see how running two cars can be cheaper than one, unless your's is very thirsty or depreciates a huge amount as the mileage creeps up. additionally 3.6k - 6k is hardly gonna make much of a difference to resale values.

i would love to get my own place but house prices or the cost of renting are sky high up here :thumbdwn: and my car isn't thirsty being a tdi im just wanting to cut back my mileage a little (and not by dodgy methods:rolleyes: ) if i can get a car with long t & t for

Personally I can't see the benefit of saving 3-6k miles on a tdi, the 'other' car won't be as fuel efficient, you'll be paying for two lots of insurance and tax and have the possibility of it breaking down. Admittedly, the fabia will need servicing sooner, be worth slightly less, and will wear (an unknown amount) more. Just drive it, after all that's why you bought it ;)

There's a car share website around somewhere (sorry no link) where you post your commute up and try and find someone to collect and take to work (or vis-versa) and split costs. MIght be worth a try.

I know communting racks up the milage - dont do so much as mentioned above, but what with occasional longer trips, it all adds up. This year had to go on a longer routes to avoid the forever road works temp. traffic lights

Car sharing is a great idea but I never seem to find anyone who is going the same route and working the same sort of hours. Did a car share with someone at the same company but they left couple of weeks later !

You've already got the best tool for the job, putting extra miles on the clock isn't the big evil its made out to be!

Even if you did get a cheap runaround, and sell it for close to what you paid for it, your still losing the tax and insurance, remembering any no claims discount isn't usually applied to the second car.

I used to be in the same position doing 75 round trip a day to work and more on top of that visiting customers. I put 65'000 miles on the Fabia...and yes, now I'm selling it the high mileage may well (perhaps foolishly) put some people off. The point is, I enjoyed every one of those 65'000 miles...and whoever its future owner(s) are will also enjoy the next 200'000+ miles its still got left in it!

So yeah - personally I wouldn't bother with a second car, and wouldn't class anything under 100'000 as 'high' mileage either :)

How long do you intend keeping the Fabia for?

Steve

This is crazy

If your buying an old cheap car your going to be paying

That's a very good point. If you're worried about what you'll get for it when you trade it in, then saving a few thou' a year won't help much. If you're worried about "wearing the car out", there's no reason why it shouldn't see the far side of 200k if looked after correctly. Certainly, the cost of changing the oil more often (say every 5k instead of 10) would be far less than running another car, and will go a long way to ensuring your car lasts as long as possible!

HTH

Lets be honest here what additional issues will he incur?

more tyre wear

more brake wear

more suspension wear

Clutch wear

cambelt - sooner

for the cost of insuring & taxing another car + hassle of buying it & selling it its just not financially worth the hassle. This is also assuming that nothing goes wrong with the older car.

Oh I forgot you will have two sets of Recovery cover to pay for too.

In fact changing those parts come resale time will be viewd in a good light by the new buyer as they will not have to replace them for x years.

The plan would be if i got a car that already has say 8+ months of tax and mot left on it so that cost would be avoidable insure it 3rd prty t+t and my current AA membership covers me for what ever car i drive...... and i plan to keep the fabia till 2009

If you buy a car with 8 months tax on it that is included in the price, i.e. if you sold it with no tax it would be worth 8 months tax less given two identical cars.

There is no mention of how much you expect the 3rd party F&F would be - for me my current car it is litterally about

Not often I agree with the guy, but :iagree:
