Metro - 'Pump My Ride' (hydrolastic suspension)

Featured Replies

I briefly had a Metro. Good points were........ er........... cheap to insure and cheap on fuel, bad points were everything else left. That said, one of the best cars I've ever driven for handbrake turns (on private roads of course ).

I guess its like the Ford Escort (I'm sure everyone knows the other name for that car) in that everyone over a certain age will have, at some point, driven a Metro.

Oh, and to the OP, whoever came up with that home made suspension pump was a genius.

Nice guide that - quite interesting!

Even I've driven a Metro, and Manny, I was born in 85... he he.

Just to drag a topic up but what about the evac of the air from the system before you pump it back up???

I drove a 114 SLI for a while thought the it was great fun to drive compared to a mk4

Golf Tdi, especially on twisty single track. Although I really wouldn't want to crash one!

I'm thinking you need a proper Suspension Pump for that, or maybe letting ALL the fluid out through the schreader valve before repumping with the pikey pump would work.

For my purposes (gettin the thing going again for a few weeks) I wasn't too worried about small amounts of trapped air.

However...Sad News!

After getting it through the MOT, we used it for a few weeks, drove around North England and North Wales, Snowdonia, unmarked roads etc 1300 miles later got 200 yards from home (and 35 hours before collecting the new Octy), hit a pot hole and BANG...suspension completely knackered. The fluid drained all over the road and by the time we parked it a minute later, the body was resting on the wheels. Poor thing. Wherever the slow leak was, must have got bigger. She's now in the hands of the local garage, will probably be scrapped, shame though. Another Metro bites the dust - unless theres any takers (comes with 11 months MOT :P)?

I had a 1980 W Reg in green 1.3 HLS model as my first car. The top of the range one, which meant it had different headlights, an ashtray and a rev counter!!!

I then apparantly upgraded to a MG Metro Turbo that had four engines...they were very weak:mad:

I had time and money and no kids then and bought Powermax pistons at
