xbox 360 - possible buy

Featured Replies

Hi

Ive a PS1/Xbox/Megadrive/Atari linx/C64.

Anyway I never get rid of any of my games nor consoles - I still on the odd occasion get Micro machines out for the PS1 much more fun than the 3D versions.

I'm now after the next gen console and with the Xbox360 I have recently seen on Watchdog and seen on many searches that the red ring of death is quite widespread? Has this problem been solved for new current Xbox360's?

IIRC MS give you a 12 month warrenty so what happens if its broken in 366 days? Do I have to buy another console? If so that is certainly a huge put off and if that is the case I may not bother.

Where is the best & cheapest place to buy them I'd need the premium pack with 2 wireless controllers.

Also I have recently heard about the xbox360 Elite! What is this machine when is it out and can those parts be added to the current xbox360 + whats the extra cost in buying ?

Thanks in advance.

I have had the red light problem with my 360, the console was 18 months old when it failed (see my 360 woes thread). I have got it working again, using advice on another forum, and apart from a small problem at the weekend the fault has not re-occured yet.

The suspect cause of these failures, is not yet addressed however, including the current elite. Rumour has it that when the Eleite is released over here it will be based on 65ns technology with a completely different motherboard.

When the elite is released here, expect it to cost much more than the current premium pack due to this new technology. The elite also has HDMI, whereas the current one is component or RGB, The elite also includes a 120GB HD (pretty useless for the UK market due to poor live marketplace).

I'd just buy the current premium, and back it up with the MS extended warranty for piece of mind.

Would you buy 2nd hand or new?

Ive always bought my consoles 1-2 years after release & 2nd hand.

The xbox I bought 2 years after launch and that was I think about 5 years ago and its working perfectly.

If the elite will cost much more than the premium xbox360 then its going to head to head with the PS3 on price.... unless of course MS reduce their prices?

Ive read your back luck thread and you state Boots sell the core for

It is alarming for any potential buyer.

The choice of the Wii against the 360 is more appealing due to this reliability issue & the PS3 is just too expensive.

Note - all this comes from the fact the Mrs has decided that as I gave her such a nice (And very expensive bday gift) that she is going to get me a new console with a few games.

Ive told her leave the PS3 its too much

Dont buy a second hand one, MS recently barred all the modded consoles from XBOX live and as a result a lot of consoles are being sold on the secondhand market that cannot be used on live.

Good piece of advice - note I never have chipped my xbox and nor would I its not worth it.

Dont buy a second hand one, MS recently barred all the modded consoles from XBOX live and as a result a lot of consoles are being sold on the secondhand market that cannot be used on live.

There are rumours going around a new mod is coming out that will not only get around the MS ban but will also un-ban machines that are currently banned.

Although, on topic, I would go with a Wii.

all 3 consoles have good and bad points the 360s biggest problem is reliability although mines outlasted my ps3 .. i am on my 2nd 360 since launch the first one died after an update but microsoft got it sorted within 5days and got me a brand new console delivered .. if its a console with great games and future great games you are looking the 360 should be the only choice just now .. the wii is a great console too with some really good games and its also loads of fun with a group of people to play.. the ps3 will become a great console when it has some great games to compete with the 360 but at the moment the 360 is the best option :)

I've played on the 360 & the Wii & the Wii is an absolute blast! If you've got an XBox you're buying more of the same with slightly improved visuals, if you buy a Wii you're getting something you'll play everytime your mates visit & just have genuine fun with.

Go on, you need a Wii

The Mrs does seem more up for the Wii as she knows the 360 would be very much me alone playing it.

My view on the Wii is that the games are much more designed for outright fun than being technically challenging.

I very recently bought an XBOX360. I found the place that does the best bundle buys seems to be Play.com. Go for the premium, it really is worth the extra. Also, don't forget that second hand games can be had from Game and Gamestation along with ebay, so it can now make for cheap gaming, which is why I bought one.

I got Gears of War, Crackdown and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 in my bundle, have since bought Test Drive Unlimited, FIFA 07, Quake 4 and Prey, all fantastic games. I can't wait til Halo 3. Of all these, Gears of War is the best, just amazing gameplay.

The wii looks like good fun, but possibly only when you are drunk and I am sure the novelty will wear off.

Yes I never buy new games - the greeat thing now about the xbox is that you can buy great games for literally

I heard the discs only get broken when you move the console with a disc inside. It does come with a sticker which says that you shouldn't move before removing discs.

The advice here seems to be that in general the discs no longer break and given the xbox360 is not kept in a draw with no air & the uprated internal noisey fans then to buy a new xbox360 now will have no risk.

I recently got an Xbox 360 Premium, with Gears of War, Crackdown, and PGR3, with an additional controller for

re 360.......

... Im surprised at this why on earth would anyone want to help subsidise M Soft who are selling a product with a common fault and your solution is when it goes just buy another "Its only 149"... come off it 149 to replace something which should easily have a 5+ year life is a joke.

To many people thats a lot of money basically p*ssed down the drain - I'd rather buy one that works and give that cash to Christian Aid.

Should it have a 5+ year life? Very little computer equipment that costs less than

Well given each generation usually lasts 5 years then the first machines do need to last the length of the platform otherwise there is an issue that buyers of the first off the line will either buy a replacement or maybe hop onto the competition.

Its crucial that the first off the line last until at least the first day of sale of the next gen console.

Would have to disagree - I mean, I'm sure plenty of people who had PS2s (which are probably still working) have gone for an Xbox 360 and haven't bought a PS3...

Rob.

yes, both controllers are wireless. currently on about 25 hours of one set of batteries, too
