2 down, 2 to go

Featured Replies

Well, this morning it happened, lost another coil. This time on cylinder number 4 (the one under all the bits and bobs). up and running again in no time thanks to the dealer diagnosing the fault and me having a spare, but now I have no spare:confused:

As I am off to germany in a couple of weeks, will anyone be able to lend me a spare for a few days just incase another goes?. I dont think the dealer will be able to get one in time.

Edited to add, it failed as soon as I started it this morning. Kept in garage overnight. The smell from the exhaust was horrible.

I had not thought of this before, but you mention a strange smell form the exhaust and that made me think  I had heard that exhaust catalysts could be sensitive to neat fuel hitting them, to the point where it is advised not to bump start a catalsyt equipped car. So with an engine running with a failed coil pack it strikes me as possible for un-burnt fuel to enter the exhaust system. So are there any implications to catalyst life in the event of a coil pack failure???

OR

Is this un-burnt fuel thing a load of nonsense???

Paul

spc - you are right to be concerned. Unburnt fuel and a hot catalytic converter is a recipe for disaster for the latter.

The handbook warns that a fault in the ignition system can lead to uncombusted fuel getting into the exhaust, with the risk of the catalytic converter being damaged as a result of overheating.

The smell was that of rotten eggs like early vauxhall cats used to make. I only drove it the 1/2 mile to the dealer and back again so hopefully the cat is still ok, although saying that when the last one went it was driven nearly 45 miles on 3 cylinders. Perhaps I need to sell it before the 1st mot is due.

Perhaps you should take the exhaust off and fit a full turbo back system.

Just thought I would add, looking at the old coil externally its ok, but heres a thing the part number on my 01 RS coil ends in G and not H like most people seem to be having problems with. Still looking for a spare.

So much for the supply situation being sorted.

I have spent all morning on the phone to various audi/seat/vw/skoda dealers in my local area and not one has any coilpacks in stock. indeed one dealer told me he had over 40 on backorder.

So things are getting desparate now, help!!!!!!:eyecrazy:

Mannyo,

http://www.tmccarsales.com have 2 but there in Navan, Co.Meath Ireland if its of any use.

Thanks Gaff, I have sent an email.

Hi manny,

I have one spare type J coil, if you're going past the A2 you can pick it up and drop it back on the way home if you're stuck.

Des, thats a good idea.

Would be too early in the morning though, perhaps a mini meet on the weekend of 15th March would be a good idea.

What do you call to early in the morning?

Way early.

No need to worry now though, all sorted. Went back to friendly local dealer and I was amazed. He had hidden around the back a supply of coils, So I have the spare I need. I might even go back on saturday and buy another if he has any left.

Thanks for the offer des.

Know this slightly is off-topic but what was your experience of fitting Milltek. Are you pleased with results: perf gain and sound? I have the Sports CAT and D/P awaiting the rear system before fitting.
