Is this beetle part of the VAG

Featured Replies

Found this bloke wandering around the back garden whilst hoovering the lawn. I managed to round him up and put him on a wood pile for his portrait.... and I only got nipped once

Stag Beetle (1 of 3).jpg

Taken with a Canon 1DSmkII, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens and lit with a Sigma ringflash.

Jesus....I need your camera! How did you get it to sit still?? lol! I really want a macro lens for my D80.....

nice pic!

it'd look great lowered on 18's :P

thats a mean looking bug, i think i would have just been tempted to mow him!

Brilliant photo though.. :D

He's an ugly little bugger isn't he!

Why is it covered in Talc.!!!!

That's a very co-operative bug, and an excellent photo

I tell you what... he wasn't co-operative, in fact he was very lively :D

This was one of about 120 shots taken over 2 hours - I was hoping he would get worn out and stop trying to wander off !!!!

Very clean bugs always have a shower before a photo session, hence the talc :D

Blimey, epic photo

Still trying to weigh up macro lens options for my 350D, but it'll involve me spending money, so I'm trying to forget about it at the moment :P

Any macro suggestions though?

Obviously the Canon macro lenses are great quality - esp the 180mm 'L', but I'm sure you don't fancy spending over a grand on it. The Canon 100mm macro gets good reviews. You may be able to pick up a used one on ebay, but Canon lenses do tend to hold thier price.

With the 350D there is a crop factor of 1.6, so the Sigma 150mm lens that I used for this shot would be equivalent to a 240mm lens. This would be very difficult to use, so a 100mm Sigma, Canon or Tamron would be about right length. By thier nature, the macro lenses are all plenty sharp, so any of them would be OK.

Hope this helps.....

Helpful info, cheers. I've been keeping an eye on eBay, but I wasn't sure exactly what was best :o

Not used macro lenses before...

Steve

Fantastic Photograph, send it to David Attenborough, and he will take you up the jungle with him next time he goes.

What beast is it, does any one know? Straight out of Dr Who.

Thanks I liked this!

This is a male stag beetle.

Apparently becoming rarer in this country. From what I have read, they don't survive for long as an adult, just long enough to do the biz. Most of them are eaten by magpies or foxes, or worst of all squished by humans:thumbdwn:

"Horny" looking little chap isn't he.
