air filter maintanence

the smoothness and pick up were noticeably improved. I think it shows up more on a remapped car.

This is a very interesting comment and I've heard others say it, but I didn't find this when I ran a few tankfuls of the stuff through either my Fabia or Mondeo (both tuned). I wonder if there's a way to quantify the fuel's effect - would a RR plot maybe show the effect of different fuels side by side?

I'm always skeptical because any fuel says you have to run x tankfuls through or use it for 250 miles to notice a difference, by which time you've forgotten what it was like on the old stuff and the environment is completely different! Same goes for Millers Power Sport 4 which I think makes a difference, but that's not very scientific :o:rofl:

Chris

The only way I can see of testing the "real difference" (and this won't test additive pack effects) is to feed the fuel pump from a slave tank, do some power runs and then run the engine dry, change fuels, reprime, and repeat the power runs.

Since air pressure, temperature and humidity are factors which affect power output, and are of the same order of magnitude as the claims we're investigating, we can't even run different fuels on different days, and if the atmosphere's unstable on the planned test day, I'd say we should postpone.

I've got a quick question about the air filters again.....................

I'm about to take the Green filter out to clean it..... All the documentation from Greens states to BLOW out loose debris etc....... Am i being daft or could i not just VACUUM it out carefully???? before then cleaning it with the cleaning fluid.

Cheers

Dave.

What I usually do is bang the filter on the pavement to get rid of all the big bits of debris. I guess you could vacuum it too ;) I then stick it in a cat litter tray filled with some Oxyaction and warm water which seems to work a lot more effectively than the Green cleaning fluid....

Cheers for that Chris.

As long as you vacuum in the right direction (so you're not sucking dirt further into the filter!) you might get away with it, but the dirt is going to be nicely bonded with all the oil so a regular vacuum might not have enough suction. An airline would be a lot more powerful.

air line on a compressor will do the job of getting most of the debris off , i've found even washing it doesn't always work satisfactory , i think i'll get the Pipercross filter soon

Will a green panel filter replacement offer much improvement over the standard air filter?

whats de-fin and how do do it?

You'll find some fins moulded inside the bottom of the standard airbox. Cut them out and it's de-finned.

will this improve performace in anyway sahpe or form?

Made it a bit noiser but no noticeable improvement when I did this!

So the air going through the filter had more energy, and hence was flowing faster. I'm not claiming more than 2 or 3% extra power.

Im tempted to get the k&n on awesomegti for

Hmm, after doing some reading I think I might got for the pipercross foam based one as I don't want any problems with my maf.

Same questions apply above tho, anyone got one? :)

I've used oiled filters for years and tens of thousands of miles and never had a problem with the MAF!!!! Don't believe all you read on the internet ;)

Fine, but isn't it better to avoid the problem of over-oiling the filter completely, than rely on getting it right?

Or wouldn't it be even better just to save money and keep the paper filter in? ;)

I went for the pipercross in the end as it's

I was reading this thread thinking exactly this! If you dont over oil the filters when you wash them then there will be no problems with any of the major oil type performance filters,k+n and bmc are used by f1 teams but this is not over advertised! Ok they probably dont re-oil them or even re-use them but.

Anyway i dont recommend pipercross and we have never fitted them to any of our customers cars we alsways go with either green or k+n and have only had 2 issues with worn hotwire airflow meters and both was not because of the oil in the filters,i wouldnt use washing up liquid to clean them either as it dosent imho clean them properly!

Although in my moped days i did use petrol to clean my air filters i wouldnt knowing what i know now use it to clean the green cotton filter thats on the skoda.

f1btn, why don't you like the pipercross filters? Got to be better than the OEM filter.

Green filters are up

I have had Pipercross in my car for a while with no issues either

But agree with the K&N thing

They would not be the market leader if there would be any issues
