turbo replacment

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, can anyone tell me whats involved in changing the turbo unit on a ocy tdi 90 bhp, (time , ease of job etc.)

Its basically started sucking up the oil in the sump and run on that, the cars a taxi but the driver had the sense to stall it as it started running on engine oil to self distruct mode especially when it would'nt switch off with the key,(his face was a picture).

I know the intercooler and intake pipes will have to be cleaned out, but its the changing of the unit i was wondering, as the haynes manual says on one model that the turbo does'nt split from the manifold and the driveshaft has to come out:eek: , can anyone help.

Thanx.

I was advised by a skoda dealer the drive shaft had to come out, but my mechanic who changed mine (110) did not need to do that.

Generally they advise new gaskets and a new oil feeder pipe as they can break when taking the old turbo off.

Take the turbo out from the top, no need to remove a driveshaft.

Remove the exhaust front pipe from underneath, from the top remove the inlet manifold and basically remove the exhaust manifold with the turbo attached. The turbo is held onto the manifold with bolts.

You may get lucky with the oil feed pipe. There are various pipes to disconnect. What I would recommend is to get a tool that will do the wire clips on the inlet hoses, it is basically a lever connected to a gripper by wires, the gripper fits over the ends of the clip and pulls them together.

Thanx for the advice guys.

Ive since found out that the engine code is ALH which looks as if the manifold is part of the unit, i was led to understand that the only 90bhp unit was seperate to the manifold which i believe is AGR, so i won't know till its out and i can get the number off the turbo.

If it is part of the manifold does this make things any worse.

Any advice very welcome.

Thanx.

All the TDi turbos are integral to the manifold on the Octavia.

So the one seperate to the manifold is the wrong one. even though the supplier only lists the one without the manifold:(

I have never seen a seperate manifold and turbo fitted to an Octavia TDi and deffo not to an ALH.

Thanx for the advice. Doing the job today hope all goes well, even though i know its the wrong turbo on its way, still i can get it stripped and cleaned up ready.

Everything you need to do to remove the turbo can easily be done from the top

including the exhaust front pipe and no need to touch the driveshaft

There are a couple of things that are not obvious such as the oil pipe on the bottom of the unit

and its much easier to remove this from the engine block side 19mm

and also there`s a bottom bracket which is also easier to remove with the bracket still attached

to the turbo 17mm, you cant see it from the top you'll have to feel for it

The rest is fairly straight forward but be careful with the oil feed pipe they can get well and truly

stuck especially on an older car so give everything a thorough soaking in WD before starting

The cleaning out of the intake manifold and EGR are what's going to take the most time and

they should ideally be left soaking overnight to get the most crud out of them, don't even

think about not doing it as its an absolute must while you've got it all apart you will be amazed

at how clogged they will be

The standard turbo for your ALH is the Garrett VNT-15 / 038253019AV200 or ending just 19A is also the same

Thanx for all the advice guys.

Job done, sorted. Everything done from top, except intercooler removel for cleaning and a oil change. Inlet manifold was full of baked in oil, took some cleaning out, intercooler had more oil in it than the engine. This car had had major engine work and i recon it was the turbo all along, it had the wrong oil (not semi ) the air side of the turbo had worn away and the ally fillings have to go somewhere, still done now.(Glad its not my car).

Thanx.
