Problems with Sun Java in Pogo.com

Featured Replies

If I use Firefox and Sun Java for pogo.com (specifically chess), I get a harsh white noise sound intermittently.

It doesn't happen with IE7 and MS Java, but Firefox needs Sun Java to run pogo.

I'd much rather use FF for everything, but can't find a fix for this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jon.

What version of java is this?

You can go to a console and type java -version, which if java is on your path will tell the version of java you have.

IE7 doesnt work with MS java, it to uses Sun Java. I know the latest Java 6 has some compatibility issues.

any java app should work the same on any platform ..... SO LONG AS it's the same version JVM running.

MS stopped producing there own JVM a long time ago.

Yes but different versions of java have different behaviours.

API's get deprecated, the newer javas can run the older code. Java 1.5 for example can run java 1.4.2 code but sometimes the positioning goes up **** creek.

Anyway if you can get a version number that would be a good place to start.

err thats what I said. If the jvm versions are the same then it will work on all platforms. Thus the JVM firefox is using is different to the one IE is using if the user is having problems with it not functioning properly.

edit. so you need to track down what version each is using. Also the JVM can have security restrictions placed on it by the host apps when communicating with Operating system objects.

Thanks for all the replies. I posted this on some computer forums and only had one response telling me to re-install!

I am currently using the Microsoft VM, version 5.00.3810. It does work with IE 7 but is a tad slow I think.

The Sun Java version I installed was 1.6.0.1.

It might be worth ensuring the Microsoft VM is completely uninstalled and then trying again.

Try the java 1.4.2 or 1.5.* plugin rather than the 1.6 if you can.
