Also it depends how wide you a** is - if your in a car with sporty seats and your a fatty then those seats are really going to cut into your lega & hips especially over longer distances.

Debateable. I'm a 18-stone former RL prop, so not exactly Kate Moss - but I've never had any issues with the sports-style seats, either in my current Fabia vRS, or the Megane Coupe I used to have...

Nope I managed to gain fuel economy when I swapped from a PD130 to PD150, that is with altering my driving style so the PD150 didn't bog in the lower gears at low RPM. The PD150 engine was great fro having big wallops of torque, but not going all asthmatic at the top end.

Given the Golf had the 150PD unit first is it worth opting for those over the Leon Cupra TDI? It will be a bit older but cheaper and as we all know TDI's just keep on going.

Maybe if you were a RU Prop it would be a different story.

I take it your going to watch the big test this Sat RSA v NZ? My view what the RWC07 final will be.

Never really been an armchair fan, TBH... I'll read the reports the next day, don't get me wrong, but watching an entire game is something I rarely do...!

know when I have sat in a Focus Mk1 its ok and that the thing its not special at all the VAG Golf GT TDI's are a very special place to be in.

It may be a very special place to sit, but it would have to be to distract you from the awful soggy ride and handling! ;)

Classless indeed! It's a small family hatchback bought by badge snobs, not a Roller or a Bentley! :rofl:

The Leon is a better driver's car, but is a bit less comfortable than a Golf.

Will not changing the normal driving style of a TDI really harm the economy though?

Actually thinking about it surely its now possible to buy the Mk4 Golf GTI 1.8Turbo 150bhp for

Is the TDI140 a common rail or a PD engine? I had heard that Vag were moving away from the PD engines as the difference in performance and economy over the latest gen common rail was indifferent/marginally in favour of the Common rail.

Also Breezer Diesel whats your view on the TDI 115PD? (as I ran one of these just so that I can have a benchmark to understand your comparisons.)

The 140 is a PD.

The 115 PD was developed into the 130. Similar pull but the 130 is a much better unit. Hard to explain in words but it has a better feel to it.

bmw 535 is best:thumbup:and goes faster and looks better and is more comfortable and.........:D

I'd rather have a 335d myself :)

Not too big for yer :P

Chris

As long as it is the touring it would be ok...

But i still fancy a 120D :P

The thing is a Mk1 Focus compared to a Mk4 Golf is like minimum wage vs

What about a MK 1 Focus 1.8 TDCI.

because its rubbish , only my opinion though , but seen enough with fuel system problems , DMF/clutch faults etc , although it is better than the Mondeo TDCI as that is utter cr@p *

*ScoobyChris' car is not included in this as he has the only good one in the country

This doesn't really balance out that way as the Diesel will cost you perhaps

150k focus TDCI that needed a new DMF, luckily covered by a warrenty, but hasn't had any fuelling issues as yet

Volkswagen Golf Hatchback - 1.9 GT TDI (130ps) 5d - Technical Data - Parker's

Volkswagen Golf Hatchback - 1.9 GT TDI (150ps) 5d - Technical Data - Parker's

As you can see from these two links it gives the tech specification of both the TDI130 & TDI150 both GT TDI 5 door models.

Weight

130TDI = 1261kg

150TDI = 1388kg

Power

130TDI = 130bhp

150TDI = 150bhp

Torque

130TDI = 228Lbf

150TDI = 236lbf

So Im assuming that the weight is incorrect for some reason however the TDI150 has ONLY 8lbf & 20bhp more the the TDI130. That is not much at all

Power is 15.4% greater so yes a nice step up

Torque is 3.5% greater - would you even feel this difference?

So the statement made previously that the TDI150 pulls much harder than the TDI130 seems to be at odds with the stats. Is this purely the delivery of the power & torque?

i.e. an Escort Cosworth 220bhp feels much faster than a Std Fiat Coupe20VTurbo even though it has exactly the same power (and less Torque) but as its old school lots of lag it all comes in one big bang higher up the rev range.

Views.

Those weight figures could well be correct. AFAIK, the 150bhp GT TDIs were 'Anniversary' editions, so came with leather, extra kit, different alloys etc. etc. Also (AFAIK) the 150bhp PD engine has a different turbo and intercooler. Maybe even different injectors. A few kgs here, a few kgs there, and I can see the 128kg difference being made up quite easily...

Power-to-weight ratio's still slightly higher for the GT TDI 150, but not by much. Torque-to-weight (not a common metric, but valid nonetheless) is actually better for the GT TDI 130...

One thing to bear in mind is that the Mk IV GTI is so un-GTIish that most other countries couldn't bring themselves to badge it as such, and it was sold as the 'Trendline'. Also, in my experience, Mk IV Golf GTIs are bought by people who resent the fact they can't afford BMWs, and would like people to think they own a sporty, expensive, and luxurious car yet actually own something that's not really any of the above. This isn't a dig based on your apparent love for the blue propellor, just something I've noticed...

This does make sense with the diesel car comments that side by side the TDI130 will pull away from the TDI150 - only when you reach higher RPM's will the benefit of a bigger turbo come into play which kind of goes against the low rev no need to change down to overtake aspect of the TDi's.

So is the general concensus that the TDI130 is the better real world car?

nope count me out of the general opinion then. I've own both (ok one was a skoda PD130 and the other was a Bora PD150) but for me the PD150 was so much better than the 130.

I don't think people can "qualify" (rather than give) their opinion unless they have "owned" or driven the two for a substantial period of time.

I thought it was sold as the GLSi or something, but either way you're right and the Golf IV "GTi" was only badged as such here, and then for marketting reasons.

Have you thought of looking at Vauxhalls?

The new Astra is a strong contender.

1.3/1.7/1.9 common rail options.

re. the PD130 / PD150 thing, you've got to take it further, really, if you want a truly objective opinion. Unless the engines are in two OTHERWISE IDENTICAL cars, there are going to be other factors that affect performance. F'rinstance the Bora, being a saloon will have a more rigid chassis than the Skoda (Auroan didn't say which, but I'm assuming either hatch or estate), so the body would be lighter overall, which is going to have an effect. At the end of the day, though, VAG must have developed the PD150 for a reason, so there must be some benefits...

I have read that vag actually made the tdi150 a 170bhp output engine but for marketing reasons its 150bhp.

So the statement made previously that the TDI150 pulls much harder than the TDI130 seems to be at odds with the stats. Is this purely the delivery of the power & torque?

The figures you quote are peak figures. For all we know the PD130 may spike up to peak torque and tail off drastically. The PD150 may hold peak torque for 4k rpm. Two extreme examples, but you see my point :D

It's like the people who claim the Fabia vRS has "more" torque than a Porsche Boxter. ;)
