Lotus Carlton.

Featured Replies

I've got a picture of me sitting in one at a motor show back when they came out, only car I can remember ever queuing up for to get into, never bothered with the other cars.

I'd love one one day.

Indecent rocket for its' day - and carried 4 / 5 etc

Pretty sure a couple of years back Evo pitted one against the flavour of the day and it didn't do too badly

And my friend Dave has made his own website for the rebuild of his (which he had to do twice as the car was in his workshop when there was a fire, gutted).

Welcome to www.LC0890G.co.uk

Looks nice Ross :)

So clean :) Any chance of a test drive?

I know a few guys with these in the lotus fraternity.

They are a stunning car!!

Quite comfy as well.

Cheers

Mind you looking at your aviator you have a rather special car too - care to tell which model it is?

Looks like an Esprit V8 to me.

Could well be - these are often forgotten about but are not too pricy to buy and are very quick.

IIRC there is big concerns with the gearboxes (which killed off the current Esprit) its an old Renault box and there are not that many left?

Other issues IIRC are cylinder liners

Great shape and its British & very classy.

I remember when they first came out and my brother in law's window cleaner

bought a new one! Just goes to show how much window cleaners can earn

in London :)

Bloke with a ladder and a chamois, or one of the guys who does tower blocks?

The Lotus Carlton doesnt use the same gearbox, the Esprit is a rear engined rear wheel drive. The LC (front engined rear wheel drive) uses the Vette box iirc. Parts are an issue but there are ways around a lot of them. As mentioned Dave has now bought three in order to make one good one, a lot of dogs out there as they wernt actually built that well and they rot just like any other Carlton.

As usual, you do remember correctly about the LC.

No idea what the box in the Esprit V8 is, other than that it's a transaxle. The Esprit mk1 non-turbo used a Renault FWD box as a transaxle, but I've no interest in the non-Guigaro mk2s.

Nice looking cars  Know a guy down the road with a regular Carlton which he's very slowly turning into a sorta Lotus looky-likey.

To be fair he's actually using real Lotus panels etc, but he's taken out the straight-six and fitted a LET and I'm sure he's hatched some plan to remove the turbo from that and fit a supercharger he got hold of from some big engined Jag

You do see them now and again, for such a rare car!

Isn't an engine rebuild about

I think parts prices WILL be that bad! ;)

Just spent 2 hrs looking at that site Ross, thats a proper job he's done!

What a legendary car... simply awesome. Wish I was rich enough to afford such a beasty.

The thing is though as great as that car was & the fact that it is very rare and is now a classic and will not lose any value/maybe gain in value doesnt detract from the fact that its now possible to buy other cars offering similar performance of the LC with the reliability & modern safety & lower purchase price.

They might not be as special but hey.

The old Scoby RB5 in its day was very fast however today hot hatches are as fast if not faster ,..... still I'd rather the RB5 one of the 444 units ever made.

Daves LC has won many awards at car shows but often gets branded as a fake believe it or not. Its been built so well with attention to detail it actually ended up looking a lot better than the originals did even when new. He bought the correct paint for the car and had it painted, but when you stand it next to an original it looks different the the LC's were made from GSI3000 Carltons that has already had been painted once and they paited over the top of the original colour.

I saw that in one of the links. They sent the engine and gearboxs back to the production line to be reused!!! :)

TBH I've not read the whole site, just remember him telling me..lol.

His old MK1 Astra was/is regarded in Vauxhall circles as one of the best built.

Ladders and a bucket :)

Subaru posts moved into a separate thread. Please choose your thread when replying. Thanks.

Good grief!!

I knew the tower block guys made loads; I was chatting to one of them in a pub a few years back; he was about my age, and retired!

Dunno, at that price I'd rather get a Monaro with a few toys.
