Performance Fall Off

Featured Replies

It may be subjective, but for some time now it seems that my 2001 Fabia 1.9tdi has not got the performance which it had even a year or so ago.

The car has covered 112,000 kilometres ( about 70,000 miles). It seems to struggle somewhat up hills and often has a job to keep up with some fairly ordinary diesel competition.

Today I was blown away - just me in the car- up a reasonably steep hill, just about doing 100 kph, (62.5 mph) pedal to the metal, when a Ford Focus Cmax tdci just FLEW past me - humiliation! :thumbdwn:

There are no obvious signs of mechanical/electrical/computer/turbo mis-function

and the car has been maintained meticulously by a VW/Skoda main dealer.

Any thoughts, guys & gals?

Book a rolling road sesh..

MAF sensor .... my Octy TDI suffered similar at about same mileage.

Identical symptoms, once replaced, smoking tyres until I got used to it again.

cheers .. Darren

Air filter, small splits in intercooler hoses, etc, you're used to the power?

C-Max is 136bhp so I wouldn't worry too much..... :D

Thanks for that - next question - how much to supply the parts - average price?

Our labour rates in Spain are just 48 euros an hour, but parts are much the same as in the UK!

i vote for the MAF sensor also

about 181 EURO

I would go with a genuine one, at least you know what you are getting :)

Hi all,

Thanks for your very helpful replies.

The problem was, indeed, the airflow sensor. I bought a generic copy via eBay for

Hi good old Soviet here,

Are you certain, or have you just got used to the way that it performs, and want some thing quicker like a Lamborghini.

Try strapping aa rocket pack to the back, light blue touch paper and stand well clear.

Soviet(dig up Brezhnev and resuscitate)

Glad you got it sorted. As Chris said, you can get similar performance tail-off's with air filters as the service schedule is stupidly long (40k from memory?) and certainly on 1.9pd's, it pays to change them more regularly. Happened to the Mrs car after 25,000 miles and the new filter made no end of difference)

I just wondered if fitting a non-genuine MAF, as I have done, would be likely to affect the fuel consumption?

I notice, even when driving conservatively, that the instant consumption read out is considerably higher than I used to see, under similar driving conditions.

Yes - the car is going really well and it's natural to use the renewed performance, so seeing high consumption with the pedal well down is to be expected.

I'm happy to trade fuel for grunt, but is the make of the MAF critical in this respect?
