48 in a 30 = 3 points &

Featured Replies

This is not me by the way!

Just "a n other" who I've discovered a F.P.N for the above misdemeanour.

Now to me, doing 48 in a 30 is way worse than what I got caught for back in 2003 (79 in a 60) - Do you think the above person was pretty lucky? I do!

Well on the numbers alone he is doing 160% of the limit you were doing 130% of the limit - so on that basis yes.

However did you have other points before this? and was his his first offence?

I had no other points. It was my only offence (well, only time I've been caught ;)) I have no other info on the other person, as it was just a slip in with some client's invoices and I don't know him at all really. It said where the offence was and it was a built up area of a local town. I think it's the fact both of us were 18/19mph over the limit, yet I was on an empty section of the A303 on a two lane bit (hence 60 limit) and he was in a town.

Yeah, sounds like he got away fairly lightly... His speedo would have been showing 50+

Very annoying as swmbo got done for 34 in a 30 and got the same punishment. SUrely its not too labour intensive to have a logarithmic increasing scale for speeding offences..?

Put simply, yes. :cop: :cop1: :cop:

I have no idea. I'd want to know the detailed location, and history of the area. For example, had the road been recently downgraded from, say, a 50 limit?

Sorry for getting on my high horse here (neigh), but I think speeding in a built up area should warrant a higher fine and more points than when one speeds on an NSL road. After all, how many kiddies play on motorways or dual carriageways?!?

As long as it's clearly signposted and there's no doubt about the limit then receiveing a fixed penalty for 48 in a 30 seems fair enough.

I've done those sort of speeds and more on occasion , and had I been spotted I wouldn't have been upset.

Fair enough cop in a built up area, but what I see red about is motorway cameras,

Gatsos, safety vans, and police hand held types.

On German motorways they have never found the need for this sort of thing.

What do others think?

I travel on the M4 regularly from Swindon and it drives my bonkers as there are 3 mile stretches with either the slow lane coned off, or worse still with just the hard shoulder coned off. There seems to be precious little work going on, but in both cases the limit is 50 which is backed up with loads of speed camera warning signs.

Just as one is able to get up to normal speed, lo and behold the next 50 restriction zone is reached. Talk about stop go, stop go!

It is bad enough having the safety speed cameras parked on top the bridges with out these added, unnecessary in a lot of cases, coned off areas.

I am beginning to wonder if this is being done deliberately.

Am I beginning to sound like the chap in TVs top gear that leaves an empty space on his world map where the US should be, (he loves em) i.e. Mr Clarkson.

I certainly think that he should have a look at the M4 as it has become a nightmare.

So you think people should be able to speed as much as they want , causing a lot of danger to other people with no chance of getting caught?

Yeah , that makes sense....

Hi Alex,

Not saying that for one minute, but the M4 currently is totally OTT.

Soviet

Bl**y hard work in these here salt mines.

Hi Alex, another one for you,

I certainly don't condone speeding but it has been proved that most accidents are caused by driver error and not speed.

From the things that I witness on the motorway it is dam right carelessness or ignorance of the highway code.

When was the last time on the motorway that a idiot pulled out from the slow lane or middle lane to the right with no indication, ie. no trafficators switched on.

You even get idiots in 'artics' doing this, with no warning they just change lanes to the right. I pity the poor bloke coming up behind in the lane that they have suddenly blocked by switching to it.

As most people know it is permissible to change lanes to the left with out signaling.

Its a pity that the police ain't so hot on this sort of dangerous practice.

Soviet

There's a difference between driving fast and driving like an idiot. It's the idiots we need to get off the road, not persecute those who are perfectly capable of driving at 80mph on a 70mph road with three lanes and no one on it at three in the morning.

I think a court summons would have been more appropriate.

In Oxford I know they trialled out giving you 3 points or speed school.

My mate got fined

So who determines who is perfectly capable of driving "fast" safely?

Chris

At the end of the day you don't need a speedo to drive safely

Seems odd, when I think the guidance to them is 10% + 2mph still. So really, they should not have given a ticket as you could argue the point.

I totally agree, I go back and see the family and the M4 is a B****rd

So who determines who is perfectly capable of driving "fast" safely?

Good question Chris...I would say [probably predictably] certainly not speed cameras. I would like to think that a traffic bobby would be able to make some kind of sensible determination...just as an example, you're doing 85mph down the motorway in the outside lane, you're leaving a good gap between the yourself and the car in front, and you're showing good lane discipline etc etc - I would like to think matey boy copper in his Volvo would think "yep, he seems in control of his vehicle" and move on, focussing on catching those who undertake, tailgate, use phones etc etc...as for speeding in towns, to me that is inexcusable.

Hi good old Soviet here,

NO ONE WITH ANY THOUGHTS ON OVERTAKING TO THE RIGHT ON MOTORWAYS WITH NO PRIOR INDICATION OF INTENTION??????

CARS AND EVEN JUGGERNAUTS DO IT NOW A DAYS.

has no Briskolian any thoughts on my previous reply, about the dangerous practice of pulling out to the right on motorways without signaling the intention to do so? as no one has come back about it. i.e. most accidents are caused by human error, i.e. dammed right carelessness, or ignorance of the highway code.

Apologies to devonutopia, as I had no wish to hijack the subject and change it, but in this case I thought it was relevant.

Please see my earlier reply, as surely some other Briskolians must condemn the action of these thoughtless idiots as I do, or are they keeping quite as they have also got in to the way of perpetrating these dangerous habits?

HELLO IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE, (TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER)

Soviet here,

No takers?

I can see that it is far too early for you lot, and you are all still lazing around in bed. Will come back later after the c**k has crowed.

I agree that this is something that needs to be dealt with , but what's worse?

You are doing 70 when a lorry doing 56 pulls out into your lane , or you are doing 95 when a lorry doing 56 pulls out into your lane?

In the first situation you need a second of braking to quickly lose speed and avoid a collision , but if you need to suddenly lose 40mph then this is much riskier and leaves you a lot less time to do it.

I know the lorry driver would be in the wrong for pulling out , but given that we know this sort of thing happens , isn't it sensible to keep speeds down so a nasty collision is less likely?
