Recommended Revs for steady speeds?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, im sure these questions have been asked before but i cant seem to find any definite answers. I was wondering what the recomended revs are for going at steady speeds such as 30mph and 50mph. Ive been driving real steady the past few days with revs just above 1500 and the economy is great but i do wonder if i should be driving with the revs higher. I mean im not accelerating out at these revs but is it actually bad to drive the car like this.

Thanks for any advice

Tony :)

Its a Fabia VRS by the way :)

The Fabia seems ok at 30 in 4th, and 50 in 6th... but it depends on the road really.

Above 1500 is just fine, as the engine isn't labouring - just change down if you need to accelerate hard. :)

It will depend on the road, weather, traffic, load in the car etc. You need to drive the car to find whats best. It's a bit like saying: "I have this piece of string, how long should it be?"

If the car feels happy at those RPM's in 4th/5th/6th your on to a winner, you can tell if the engine is labouring (Well when I learnt to drive it was something I was made aware of). If it is you change down!

I agree :)

Fair enough, thanks Tom thats what i usually drive at anyway. It's just when i read these forums i get the impression people think the car should be driven at higher revs. The car does feel good at low revs (i can tell when its labouring, im not an idiot) but thanks anyways

I think this is referring to the DMF problems which arise from booting it from low revs. If you need to accelerate hard, best to change down a gear as Tom suggested. If you're just cruising you can stick it in a higher gear, but I tend to hold lower gears as it offers better engine braking and acceleration and my economy doesn't seem to suffer.

Remember there is no right way to drive a car ;)

I tend to stick about 2k rpm.. if i need to boot it ill change down.. ive got the old "long" gearbox, so 6th is only really any use at 80mph
