Has PD130 oil changed recently?

Featured Replies

Booked my car ['05 Fabia vRS] into Jabba to get a 30k service last week [it's getting done tomorrow] and the guy mentioned something about not being allowed to use a certain type of oil for it anymore.

You get long life[or variable?], and well, I'm guess, non-long life oil, he explained.

Now, I always though that as it's a PD130, it's on fixed servicing, therefore it needs 505 01 oil. Now, are there two types of 505 01 rated oil, or am I getting my knickers in a twist for no reason?

Is there actually a "long-life" version, or is this actually variable oil? If so, that can't be used on my Fabia vRS?

My 'local' dealer is a bit pap, and I've no issue taking it to a non-Skoda dealer for servicing during it's warranty, I just don't wanna get in a muddle with the oil, as I know that it's pretty essential to get right.

5w 40 - 505.01 oil for 10k intervals :)

The long life stuff is indeed for variable service intervals and is simply fully synthetic rather than semi and thus costs more.

Good. Thought as much.

I'm sure I and Mr Jabba can get to the bottom of it tomorrow - might just ask to look at the container to see if it says 505 01. :D

Cheers.

I've always used Fuchs Titan PD in my fixed-interval Fabia, and that's fully synthetic and 505.01. Although many synthetic oils last longer than semi-synthetics, their longevity isn't because they are fully synthetic.

That's not entirely true. The synthetic chains take longer to break down than their mineral counterparts and are thus more resistant to heat stress etc.

Oilman told me that back on the BMW forum. It's also easier to get an oil to have a wider range of viscosities when it's fully synth than when it's a semi, and still be stable.

Either way there is no issue using Longlife oil on a fixed service schedule should you wish to.

Well, I'm not overly bothered, tbh. The guy just said something about how they can't sell X anymore, so use longlife instead. So long as it's 505 01 rated, I'm happy.

Might explain why the cost of oil on my last service was twice what it was 3 months ago...
