what is this bang??? help???

Featured Replies

guys,

just got in the car and as i drove away from the house something went bang. i now have a rattle coming from the driver side and it's right at the back of the engine bay/over the driver side wheel.

when i parked up i had a few quiter bangs and it sounds like a spring is breaking, i suspect it's the cable that connects the bonnet lid release to teh bonnet lid but is there anything else coil like that sits in this area.

i dont think it's the suspension as the car doesnt look lopsided and i would have seen a problem with the way the car drove.

thoughts??

thanks

bal

mine has just done the same i think its the driver side coil spring ,getting in the garage this week

Sounds like a bust spring, not unheard of, get it looked at straight away.

This happened to me earlier this year and it was a broken spring, they cost about

I helped a friend with a broken spring on his car a couple of months ago, it went with a bang not unlike a shotgun being fired apparently.

The easy way to confirm this is the finger test, ie go around the car putting your fingers between the top of the wheel and bottom of the arch whislt it is parked on level ground. This should give you an idea if one corner is lower than any of the others.

If it is the case that the spring is broken, you have to go to Skoda for the part, they will want chassis number etc, but may not know which rating of spring to give you anyway. The rating can hopefully be seen by checking on the spring there should hopefully be 5 couloured dots, they may want this sequence.

Bearing this in mind, ring the dealer prior to needing it as they probably will not stock it and will have to order it in, taking probably a few days to get.

Finnally if you can help it dont drive the car, if the spring has gone, the common issue is that the top 4 inchs break off, this is the part that locates it in the top mount on the chassis, which obviously swivels, now the spring will more than likely be resting on the chassis, (which obviosly doesnt swivel) and has potential to cause some damage if left, and driven extensivly.

yep it was a broken spring, a small chunk fell to the floor when i jacked up the car to check it out. problem is i am at my parents in suffolk and i live in london plus i have a sodding exam tomorrow ... yaaaaa.

train it is lol.

final question - do i need to replace springs on both sides or just the one?

cheers guys.

ps hee hee now im thinking abotu getting some coilovers.

You should really do both to do the job properly, but you could also proably get away with just doing the 1. Its your choice really.

my o/s/rear spring broke last month. The bottom coil had broke & you couldn't tell that the right height had adjusted much. Anyway I got a good deal on a set of weitec lowering spring kit. So if your interested in the pair of front springs off mine just PM me.
