PD170 vRS Engine Problems

Recommended Posts

Just a small update......cathalb has since disposed of the TDi and got a proper petrol hearse...

AFAIK the vRS Tdi engine is to be replaced in February completely with a new common rail one. I'm not sure what this means to the existing owners (they may replace the whole engine, who knows?) , but "soon to buy" contingent should wait till then for the new engine.

Are there any common rail versions of this engine in the VW family at the moment? Or any other manufacturer? I am a car engine technophobe for forgive me if I'm asking dumb questions... Is it likely to have better performance? Improved mpg? Less noise? Less faults hopefully! Its depressing to read about the engine having issues in a car ones planning to buy, then to read its being replaced in the not so distant future... but I don't know that I want to wait 5 months...kinda stuck in limbo...

This concerns me.... soon to purhcase... Just when I think I've decided, along comes another issue which puts me off!! I may just stick with my bicycle.....

If it's any consolation, apart from this problem, I love the car - although I wasn't aware there'd be another engine coming out! Guess that'll have a big effect on the resale value if it's true...

The term stutter was given to the slight hesitation that is experienced at low revs under acceleration.

As a side note I happened to see a document which said that there is an ECU update required for 2200 affected UK TFSi Octy's. I know SEAT have been 'flashing' them and I think VW have been as well.

Hoping to get more info soon.

Word of warning - It will relieve you of your remap if you happen to have one.

Stu,

Do you still have that document? As mine is very snappy from 1st to 2nd with a considerable delay. Took it to the dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong!

it got to be only a few because ive driven a few now ( in fact after reading this i went for a quick spin in our 170tdi demo) and i cant find this issue at all. infact ive been very surprised at how good the TDi is. im also surpised that they havent moved onto common rail yet either. but if they can push this technology to this type of performance, i wonder what they can do with common rail?

  • 6 months later...

VRS Diesel 18 months old, everything ran fine, never a DPF in sight. Engine Warning light on < 1 month from new - known issue as found here on this great site, so got it turned off at 1st service ("oh you need a s/w update to fix that, we'll do it at the next service as we don't have it yet"). Yes, 1 week later it wa son again following 10k service.

Stuck behind lorry on slow 40mph A road. No, I don't drive like a Granny, I'd have preferred an Impreza, but you can't always ensure > 40mph and 3k rpm when you're in a bloody queue. Next it went into limp mode. 2hr wait for RAC to come and fix after limping onto destination. Now DPF comes on regularly, especially after refilling, and I have to drive at 3k rpm (recommended by RAC skoda specialist as"peak DPF revs to clear").

Frankly, this is a joke. Its coming on once every 2-3 days and requires a considerable (10-15 mins) at 3k rpm to clear. I don't want to go into limp mode again nor did I buy a car for it to determine how I have to drive. I'll allow 5k after the 20k service and if it isn't fixed i'll swap for something more reliable.

Will insist on ALL s/w upgrades (I hear possibly 2 due via this web site), then swap to an alternate vehicle that works according to my needs if not fixed.

Footnote: this was eventually diagnosed to be "a faulty sensor", which was replaced. Since then the car has run magnificiently and has done 55-60+ mpg on an "economy" run. As I am so pleased with the value-for-money aspect (compered to my previous 3-4 audis) I will be buying a replacement, but probably petrol as i do less mileage now and that nice Mr. Brown has penalised Diesel users. :)
