Annoying vibration

Featured Replies

Can anyone help with this problem. Get a vibration coming through the cabinb of the car and starts a just under 30mph and increases with speed. Gets noiseier when turning right but disapears when turning left. I did have the top left suspenion mount replaced because there was play in in, could the garage have done it wrong?

Was making noise before the mount replacement and since had all four tyres replaced and all discs and pads replaced and still the noise persists. Can't detect any play in the bearing but the garage that fited the mount said i needed a wheel bearing and a cv joint might need doing and there is a clunk on that wheel when you spin it back and forth

I think your garage were right. Your description sounds very much like the LH outer CV joint is on the way out.

Noise varies. some days are louder than others would this still fit with the worn CV?

Not really IME. I've had noisy wheel bearings have some days better than others though, but I've never had a bearing cause vibration.

You say you can't detect any play. How are you checking? I'd jack up the suspect corner, hold the wheel top and bottom, and rock it gently. Then repeat with a helper holding the brakes on. At this point I'd be looking for a reduction in play to confirm the diagnosis.

Checking the play as described. the vibration is like a resonance in the cab and even makes pieces of trim vibrate. At about fifety the interior mirror vibrates so image is blurred!

Now that's a vivid description! Which has given me an off the wall idea (so rare I've only heard of it once before with FWD, and I'm not even Lummox will have actually experienced it). Could one of the driveshafts have lost a balance weight, or had one shift, cos it really sounds like a bad out of balance problem? I think it would need a careful examination with axle stands or a wheel-free lift, and a good inspection lamp, to establish if that's the case though.

Also try putting the spare on the suspect corner in case it's a tyre issue.

I promise this story is true, though I'd have thought he was on a wind-up if I'd not been there and seen it "live". My mate worked in a small local garage (so small he was the only mechanic or tyre fitter). A car came in with a complaint of "rumbling" from the back left corner following fitting new tyres. He took that tyre off, shook it, and it rattled. He demounted the tyre, and removed a pair of 8" pliers from inside it. Job jobbed.

Can't be tyre as three different tyres have been on that corner, one original and two new ones, one of which i fitted myself so no pliers but it is a mighty impressive job to do that. Will try and check the driveshaft inbalance idea at the weekend

Did Anyone ever get an answer to this?? I have a similar sounding problem on my 99 Octy TDI SLX. when accelerating and turning left (even slightly) I get a vibration noise... I know it's not suspension as the shocks and springs have been changed since it started?? Same with Tyres... Had replacements and tracking done but the noise is still there

However when I do a right hand turn there is no noise at all????

I thought possibley something to do with the driveshaft?? But I'm no expert!!! Any Ideas???

i had a similer thing, it turned out to be a bracket for the exhust about half way down that was loose, the sound came when i was speeding up and slowing down.

tightened up no probs

then again it could have been the wife B)

hmmmm Interesting.... I shall have to have a look to see if there are any brackets loose. Did your vibration only happen when turning in one direction??

could be but cant remember as i was in the middle of moving back from germany and thought the car was going to fall to bits ( that was 2 years ago) and i was stressing some what :(

mostly at low speeds

Well if its a Fwd car the esay way to test the weel bairing is to jag 1 frount side up with a trolly jack (not your weel jack :-) ) and hand brake on and put it into 2nd and run it up to speed and then drop it into N and it should spin with not grinding or vibration.

and repeat on the other side.

If you have never done this befor DONT DO IT WITH ANY THING IN FROUNT OF YOU  walls/cars lol give your self a safty zone.

I did this recently, but I had both sides of the front up on axle stands, and stuck in 5th. Had to turn off ASR though as the car got a bit stroppy with me! Figuredwith both sides up in the air, the diff would not have to do so much work!
