Programming Keys

Featured Replies

I know this has been mentioned on loads of threads in various forums, but I need to know the following. I have 1 key that works and one that doesn't. I've changed the battery and need to synchronise this with my Octy Mk 1. My question is, is it the key you NEED to re-program that goes in the ignition or the key that already works? Sorry for this but I don't want to erase/destroy my only chance of getting to work tomorrow!

Thanks guys,

You need vag com. You tell it to reprogram 2 keys (while accessing vagcom by having ignition on using the good key) - Then you turn each key in turn and both should be programmed. I'll let someone else say which bit of vagcom is used for this, as I don't know (but will need to myself soon, as I have an extra key to program as well)

Are you trying to unlock/lock the car or start the engine with the key that doesn't work? Or both?

If the former, the key that works needs to be in the ignition, on setting I or II. Are you then aware of the rest of the procedure? If not, I'll go off and find it from SeatCupra.net, where I found it originally (I sorted a flip key for my Ibiza, when I had it).

If you're trying to start the car, the immobilizer chip's either goosed in the 2nd key, or not present. Has the second key ever worked? IIRC, you'll need the SMC code for your car (found on that tag they give you with the car) and either visit a dealer, or someone who knows what they're doing with VAG-COM.

Procedure For Matching Remote Key Fobs To The Car:

Using a spare key switch the ignition on.

Insert the key to be programmed into the driver's door lock.

Manually lock the driver's door using the key.

Press the Lock or Unlock button on the fob once.

Wait for a least one second.

Press the Lock or Unlock button on the fob twice.

The vehicle horn will sound to indicate correct programming.

Thanks Stu - If it doesn't work, does this mean that I'll have to go to a dealer and have them sort it out?

It does work, you don't always get the horn confirmation though.

I'm assuming that it does start the car and it's only the remote locking not working.

Think it's the unlocking that's the problem. Will try again later after work - last time I just thought it didn't do anything coz the horn stayed quiet! Will let you know. Phoned dealer last night (David Ian in Morecambe) where I got it from last week and they said although it isn't covered by the warranty, they will sort it out FOC. It's just a bit of a problem distance-wise as they are about 100 miles from me!

Thanks again

Let me know how you get on:thumbup:

My spare wont unlock the car via remote, although it will lock it.

tried the reprogramming and it didnt sort it.

Well, I've tried it again and although the key will start the car, it won't lock/unlock it. I'll have to go to a local dealer and see if they can help!

Cheers anyway

I've done that myself before so I know it is a valid procedure.

Yep, and those are the same as the instructions I used from SCN, when I did it.
