About to buy my 1st Octy. What to look for ?

Featured Replies

I found an '02 L&K 110 TDI Combi ( 75k miles on the clock ) for sale nearby.

Very taken with it:) .

Havnt had a Skoda before & the last VAG car I had was a pre TDI Golf :D

No service history with it :thumbdwn:

It has a duff front wheel bearing. Would this be normal at 75k ?

( Dealer selling promises to fit new timing belt kit & fix w/bearing )

What problems should I be on the look out for ?

What are major service items from 75k to 125k ( or 5 years to 8 years ) ?

If I buy it what codes / data should I get ( Radio code I presume but are there other codes )

Olddog ( but a Skoda Newbie )

Personally id make sure i could trust the dealer that the cam belt was actually done.

If that is definitely sorted then your dont really have much to worry about. The only codes you should get is the one attached to your key for the immobiliser but i didnt get it when i bought mine so its not a major problem really

Is there no security code to reactivate the radio after a power failure ( disconnect of battery ) then ?

no the ECU will decode it for you

no the ECU will decode it for you

Unless its not the original head unit, then a code will be needed.

You should get a code for the Radio, even the original one as if you loose the power you need to put it in to power it up if the ECU isn't coded correctly.

You also need to look out for squeaky front ARB bushes/ARB, squeaky radiator mounts and make sure that the turbo comes in strong. Warm the thing up and really boot it in a lower gear to get the turbo pushing full boost. The turbos can clog up on these engines and if they do, doing this should hopefully show up an overboost error.

Also worth checking out, or budgeting for a MAF and putting a clean air filter in (

Make sure the cited works are actually done.

Other than that, really only squeaky bushes, a possibility of peeling paint on the tailgate (It's a galvanised panel, but repainting it can be tricky with a metallic), and issues with the water pump impellor (get the dealer to fit a new pump when the front cover's down for the cambelt. It would even be worth paying for the pump and 15mins labour to change same during a belt change).

Thank you all for your replies

All good stuff

Do I gather that

- I should be asking for a radio code

- ARB links can give problems

- New MAF needed soon

- I need to contrive to verify that new belt and water pump are fitted

- Turbo is prone to getting gummed up

I cant believe that air filter change is every 40k.....my present oil burner needs a new airfilter every 4k or it smokes !

Yes, there is a little paint peeling from the tailgate in the corner where its is attached to the handle

Radio code - yes.

Arb Links - maybe. My Elegance hasn't made any noises from there, but it's a common issue with the vRS.

MAF - maybe,

Cambelt - yes. Waterpump - this is an owner advisory/precautionary, not a VAG or SUK one.

Turbo - More of an issue with a 110 than with the other engines. Can you confirm that the TDi badge is like this TDi rather than like this TDi? All that seems to be necessary to prevent it is to give the car some beans then lift off sharply on a reasonably regular basis.
