Octavia vRS Video Input Connection?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I proudly picked up my new Octavia vRS a few months ago and it came with the full colour sat nav system (standard). I noticed it had options for AV/AUX inputs and the ipod works great when connected to the jack in the centre console.

After playing about with the system I see that the display is also equiped for video as when I am stationary the display will show a black screen, but when I drive I get a message saying something like "The TV function has been disabled for your own safety whilst driving".

The connection in the centre console says its an AUX connection, but on the sat nav system you have options for AUX and A/V. When I set the system to use audio & video with A/V and use the aux connection I can hear the ipod.

My problem is no-one (not even the dealer  ) can tell me where the video input is.. I cant find anything in the manuals.

ANyone got any idea's?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any help would be greatly appreciated.. :)

There is an extra socket on the rear of the sat nav unit, this allows a video adaptor to be plugged into it, this enables a video signal to reach the screen when stationary.

Fitting the full colour sat nav has become a popular upgrade as the units are available on ebay, I fitted one to my Octavia along with the video adaptor to enable an underseat DVD player to work.

Welcome to Briskoda by the way :D

If the colour sat nav was standard I presume you are not from the UK?

Many Many thanks!

Theres me thinking it would just be a simple cable. lol. No wonder the dealer had no idea, all I got from them was "We dont sell many of these...".

As you have done this already it it easy to route the cables? Do I need any special tools to get round the back of the sat nav unit?

Your right about location. Living in Germany. Reason I put sat-nav standard was Iam not sure of the model number. Even looked on the skoda web page to check the optional extra's and all it says is colour sat nav.

Cheers again.

Stu's guide to fitting the sat nav unit (A.K.A. MFD2, may help if you search this forum) will help you remove and refit the unit if required: Octavia-vRS.com - MFD2 Install Guide

You need to be very careful with the 12volt power supply to the video adaptor as it is susceptible to whine from the alternator/xenons or any other high frequency/high power device. Make sure it's properly filtered etc.

As you'll see in the guide, the unit is very easy to remove as long as you take your time with it.

I routed my DVD cables down the side of the centre console and under the passenger seat, the adaptor lives behind the MFD2 as there is plenty of room in there.

For your reference:

A: Radio antenna connection

B: Multimedia input connection (this is where the video adaptor plugs in)

C: Standard wiring loom connector (Quadlock)

D: GPS connection

Another thing I've been keeping a weather eye on are these single DIN DVD players. It would fit in the rack in the boot with the CD Changer.

I also stumbled on a resonably price single DIN car puter with wireless internet last night that would also fit in the rack in the boot. ;)

Interesting.............:rubchin:

I knew there would be a use for those slots someday :P

I had a single DIN DVD player under the passenger seat on my last Octavia but I had it fitted to 2 mounting brackets to keep it off the floor.

If only that storage cubby under there was a liiiiiitle bit bigger :thumbdwn:

Or hows about that carputer with a mahoosive HDD thus removing the need for the DVD player.

Certainly plenty of potential there.

An example of a single DIN jobbie here: eBay.co.uk: Lilliput Single Din Car DVD Player PC BlaXtream TC-1000 (item 270142853564 end time 12-Jul-07 14:50:11 BST)

you got any pics or model number of that dvd player dstev2000? Is it a 12v player or 240v?

ive been thinking about putting a ps2 in the glove compartment for a while but havent got around to ordering one of those connector cables.

The DVD player is a 12 volt type, it came with a ciggie lighter lead and a permanent wiring option with noise suppressor. It also came with a remote and magic eye (essential IMO).

I just routed the A/V leads to the rear of the MFD2 and hey presto, DVD movies in the traffic jams :P

The player is similar(ish) to this one:eBay.co.uk: In Car DVD, VCD, CD, MP3 Player *UK Supplier* (item 270142132755 end time 12-Jul-07 21:45:00 BST), it was a fairly cheapo one but that was for a good reason, It would only get coffee spilt over it

It's the little bits you see hanging under a man dog.

It's certainly another good way of trying to kill my wallet :o

And combined with a mobile phone and a fast connection you can have t'interweb anywhere you like.

looks like a good solid unit. Its funny how the dd players cost the same as the cables nowadays!

Where did you get your suppressors from as I cannot find anywhere that sells them anymore around my neck of the woods?

Ideally you need to fit suppressors to the RCA leads and the 12volt power supply to eliminate as much alternator whine as possible.

The alternator and xenons if fitted are the biggest culprits along with high powered devices and switching relays.

eBay.co.uk: Boss Audio RCA Ground Loop Isolator Noise Suppressor ! (item 260137438540 end time 14-Jul-07 03:25:27 BST)

As for noise suppressors, Halfords or any ICE shop will sell them.

Might be an idea to do a little research on ground loop isolation as it can be a real PITA to eliminate.

When my Octavia turns up (June 30th) I will be reinstalling the MFD2 and DVD player so i'll be playing with noise suppression and no doubt posting it on here somewhere :D

I notice the OP has confirmed the AUX input works for audio with the MFD2 now. Anyone closer to understanding what wire swaps are required to get it to work for people like me who have done a DIY installation of the MFD2?

Got a test to do later today so I may or may not have some news later.

Altinator Whine is an issue with my car with all standard components.

We have a small portable dvd player (hangs on the back of the car seat) that the kids watch in the back of the car. When we connect the DVD player to the AUX to get the sound out of the car speakers theres almost unbearable humming when the xenons are on..

Dave -

I'm not convinced it's possible at the moment. I've completley forgotten how a Stream works when you have an Aux in. Is there an Aux button? How does it switch on the source?

What I tried the other day didn't work. The next move would be to move the pins for the Aux in to the next plug along in position 5 and 11.

Fancy giving it a go?

I'm not the best person to be fiddling with cables ;)

Dave.

I phoned CS this afternoon to see if they could shed any light. It's like banging your head off a wall.

Woman on telephone takes message, has no idea what caller is talking about, gets it all wrong and passes wrong message to tech guy.

I have a plan but we'll have to wait a few weeks until it arrives I'm afraid.

Sounds like the electrical noise is coming up the power lead to the DVD player, it probably doesn't have any noise filters in it. Try and find one with a built in L-C noise filter in it. I don't know for sure whether the xenon noise is feeding back up the +12 volt side or the chassis ground.

Do you get humming/whine when the DVD player is used with headphones?

And do you get humming/whine when a battery powered device (Ipod) is plugged in to the AUX socket and played through the car speakers?
