YouTube - Jetcar at Santa Pod 1/4 mile 6 seconds

Vid is not of the best quality. I was eating an ice cream with one hand and trying to video with the other. It is something ELSE to feel the noise of that car as it goes past. Enjoy. :)

Holly cr@p:eek:

Jesus H Christ!!!

I love the stunned silence after it has gone by!!

Hahahaha

I'm just waiting for Jase's posts on the best way to attach a jet engine to the Mongrel!

Chris

Btw, it's cable ties and gaffer tape ;)

it's...scary loud - although the "volume" isn't the worst part, it's the sheer force of the sound hitting you :D

Nearly as mental as the hydrogen peroxide motorbike eh?

Assistant guy flicks the switch and runs off, poor chap on the bike just waits for the thing to perculate and zing, off he goes..lol.

I love the jet car, seen it a good few times now from various angles. behind it is awesome but you get covered in bits of tarmac and all the fumes. but aviation fuel smells amazing!

err.....yes, that was indeed crazy  :D

I have it on DVD and you can actually see it al the way down. Trouble is my editing skills are terrible and getting it onto youtube is beyond me. Also go tthe funny car where the body flew off midway.

I personally find the jet cars a little tame. :P

I used to go to Santa Pod as a teenager some 30 years ago; when funny cars maxed out at about 180mph and pro-fuelers did only 215mph. Henk Vink thrilled us all with a triple engined Kawasaki.

Jet cars had only just started to be developed for drag racing - the problem seemed to be getting them up to full power quick enough and to be frank at the time they were not very exciting compared to all the fun to be seen from the big V8 etc .

But Sammy Miller turned up in his hydrogen peroxide rocket powered funny car ("Vanishing Point") and did 0-314mph in 4.2 sec !!!! :D The noise was incredible. There was this almighty bang and the car shot up the runway followed by a massive white cloud of condensing steam. He must have been totally mad as he sat with the rocket between his legs (where the gearbox would have been on a V8 powered car) and set off with his hand already on the parachute release as he would get the the end of the runway very quickly indeed.

He later did the 1/4 mile in 3.58 sec, 0-386mph  - an unbeaten drag strip world record as far as I know. He did 0-60 in 0.16 sec and 0-100mph in 0.36 secs

He' s dead now.

Ahh fond memories.

I googled it and came up with this informative site

Sammy Miller Worlds Fastest Cars

and

Jules

just watched that Vanishing point vid , my god it was fast
