Auto-lights / windows problem

Featured Replies

Before I make a fool of myself at the dealer for not understanding the maxidot configuration, I just want to check something here...

Whilst I was out driving in the sunshine (honest) just now, I noticed that my headlights were on (switch in auto position). This seems to me as though the sensor in the mirror assembly is a touch trigger-happy.

Also, just after this happened, I parked up at the side of the road, took my key out of the ignition and then, whilst I was still in the driver's seat, all four windows self-closed (I know I hadn't pressed the lock button because the doors weren't locked).

If we assume that these incidents, which occurred less than two minutes apart, could be linked, then I would suspect that the rain sensor could be the problem because, as I understand it, with the light switch in the auto position, rain lighting would switch the lights on whilst driving and close the windows when parked. Only thing is, it wasn't raining, not even a spot but if the sensor's a bit iffy perhaps that doesn't matter.

Any suggestions before I confuse the dealer would be much appreciated.

That all sounds entirely sensible.

With the lights on auto, it has been known for them to turn on in sunshine if you are going under a bit of shade if the light sensor reads dark enough.

The windows are a bit odd though. If it happens again, take it back to get it sorted.

There is an option in the coding for comfort closing of the windows, wonder if it's been enabled.

Yes, I'd expect it passing under a low motorway flyover or motorway junction under-pass but not passing a tree (admittedly quite a tall one but even at 20mph its hard to imagine that could cause it).

Yes it has - if I hold down the locking button the windows will rise until I release the button. The rain closing is enabled too.

I think I'll monitor it for a couple of weeks. Actually, I'd quite like a reason to take to the dealer so's I can be cheeky and ask them to enable the n/s rear fog lamp 'whilst they're at it' - you never know...:D

I was meaning the controller long coding mate. You won't have explored that else you wouldn't be going to the garage for your fog light ;) .

It's possible I'm confusing 'comfort' closing with 'convenience'. Is there a difference and, if so, what is it?

Many thanks.

Obviously model dependant but isn't that able to be changed through MaxiDot...the rain closing feature that is :)

There are some more in depth options Colm. I've not got round to taking a look at them all yet but I seem to remember some stuff about 'comfort closing' and rain.

Rain closing is available in Maxidot (a name which frankly doesn't do the display justice) and is enabled on my car. As far as I can remember (and the handbook is in the car and I'm not about to brave the wind and rain to get it :D ) the auto-lighting isn't controlled from Maxidot (except for the leaving/coming home duration) just from the rotary dial.

I still think my problems could be an over-sensitive/faulty sensor.

From reading the forums it seems that quite a few people have these teething problems when their cars are new. Typically, a new electronics device (mp3, mobile, tv, satnav, etc.) will either fail very quickly or last a long time. Given the volume of sales and the complexity of modern cars its not surprising that there should be some glitches like this I guess.

Ah right, there was definitely one for Rain Closing on the MY07 Cars with Maxidot IIRC, I hope I'm not confusing it with something else

I'm still getting used to my auto lights/wipers etc.

Lights - sometimes come on in the dusk, before a rain storm etc, really when it is getting dull. Othertimes they have come on in sunshine, but not that often. Someone on here said that how the light sensor works, driving under a tree with dappled shade can confuse the sensor (something to do with frequency maybe?). Also when I wash the windscreen becuase of the number of bugs the lights can come on becuase I presume they think it is raining.

Wipers - sometimes, but really not often, they will sweep once when there is no rain. Maybe dust(?) or a squished bug can fool them.

Auto window closing - combine either of the above and you can get a system that thinks it has been wet at some point so I'll shut any open windows when you turn off.

I will hear the window motors click all the way round when I turn off the engine (my windows are always shut with using the climate) so it can happen fairly often in this weather when I cleaning the windows with the washer due to those darn bugs!
