Remap and stock wheels

Featured Replies

Hi

Has anyone had their vRS remapped (to 170bhp+) but KEPT the 16" stock rims?

I was wondering whether 16s are too small/narrow to cope when a FWD car has 280 lb/ft or more of torque?

Any advice?

Thanks!

Mine was fine on standard rims and tyres after the remap, although the Conti's weren't the best rubber to cope with the extra power. I now run narrower tyres on the front and have no problems, although I am using a premium quality tyre now.

16 inch standard wheels. Are fine to cope with that power.

The problem could depend on the way the power is delivered.

I'd use decent tyres (Toyos) and have it remapped so the power is progressive but if you think 16s would be okay that's great as I want to keep the car looking like stock for 'sleeper fun'!

I have mine just over 200bhp and on the standard wheels with Toyo T1R's and the car is fine so I'm sure you'll be fine.

200bhp? Excellent! Do you know what your torque is? And who did your remap?

Not yet, I'm hoping to get it on rollers sometime soon but am waiting to see if there are any nearby rolling road days as that would be a good day out and cheaper

Automotive Performance Services in Brackley did my remap after fitting my Allard VT2 hybrid turbo and Sachs Clutch. They said it was on par with a Golf they had there that had some more work done to it and that was running 225bhp but said mine is roughly 210-215. I'm happy enough saying 200 so can't wait to get an actual figure.

16" wheels with a Revo map was ok. The ride and handling was really good with the FSD's and Eibachs. But with the 17" wheels the ride was a lot stiffer although the larger wheels gave more confidence when pressing on. They look better too.

i have standard ones on mine and they are not too bad as a lot of others have said it depends on the driver if you plant your foot in 1st or 2nd you will get loss of traction even with traction control on if you feed the accelerator in gently it is a lot better and quicker

One thing to bear in mind... I took my car on the Nurburgring with standard rims and tyres on (with lowered suspension) and it handled remarkably well (once the conti's were warm), once I changed the rims and tyres a few months later the handling was nowhere near as good on track... It looks better now, but a track day will mean I need to change my rims over :)
