TT shifter to reduce gearlever throw?

Featured Replies

hi just wondering if this mod is a universal VAG mod? i've been reading a bit about it on various VeeDub forums... has anyone triced it on an Octy?

Allegedly reduces throw by approx 25%, shift is a little notchier (positive) and fairly cheap too :D

Cheers

would have thought it would be fairly straight forward to swap em over, not 100% though as the TT's are 6 speeds are they not ?

One thing that is getting on my nerves is the notchiness of the vRS' gear shift, especially from 2nd to 3rd, it hinders fast changes some what. Can someone please assure me this loosens up with mileage !?

Doh! hmm thought the 180bhp TT may have been 5, but i've no idea :o

Nah my vRS has hit 37K and it's still a bit notchy characteristics of the gearbox methinks

I rate my gearchange as notchy but K has driven the car and says it is better than many/most. The 1.6 I was loaned while my car was being serviced had a very notchy gearchange which I wouldn't have been able to live with long-term.

Try B & M. They do a beautifully engineered short shift kit specifically for the Octavia, part number: 45114. It's a pig to fit but is worth it I think. The throw is certainly reduced. Downsides, apart from fitting, are: reverse changes to lift up collar (confuses your local Skoda dealer) and the aluminium gear knob is cold in winter!!

Neuspeed short shift kits seem to be better than the B+M ones imho.

180 bhp TT's have both 5 + 6 speed depending on the age.

But any of the lever based kits are a bit of a fiddle to do as you need to drop the lever and housing out from underneath the car so the exhaust and heat shields need to come off first.

What can make a big difference is changing the gearbox oil. TT's had a big problem on early cars, rectified by filling the gearbox up with 10/40 engine oil. Made a hell of a difference.

Gentlemen, allow me to make my first post (Outside of the Noob forum) actually ON-Topic

The 5-speed TT transmission linkage was a direct replacement for that on my '01 A3 w/FEX Transmission (Thx DBW )

You can take a gander at: http://www.reimundez.com/vwmods/mods/audittshifter.html

And IIRC the part number I ordered was: 8L9805629A

But bare in mind this part number is for the ball joint type linkage.

Hope it helps

I have no problems with my gearbox.....very easy to use and not notchy at all.

Reverse was a bugger when I first got it and occasions can be obstinate but it has got better with miles.

I would say though that it's not the fastest and has a long throw action. Doesn't like rushed changes.

Hi Drill, thanks for that, did the TT part improve the gearchange, reduce throw?

Cheers

Fergal

Hi Fergal,

Yeah, the TT linkage WAS an improvement over std IMO. I didn't go measuring the throw before and after, but I've heard 20-25% reduction. For me, it was just enough to feel weird afterwards  I would shift, and the throw was just short enough that I kept thinking I wasn't fully in gear  but after a little while I got used to it :D It was also MUCH cheaper than any aftermarket parts. I paid something like
