The revs go so low that the engine stops

Featured Replies

Hi there, I have a strange problem here. Today when I was driving around the city I noticed that when I came near a steep turn, pressed the clutch pedal and braked the car's engine stopped completely and I had to start it again. It happened three or four times until I got home. It runs well when standing still, though when the engine's cool it tends not to run smoothly while stationary. Later today the problem seemed to have disappeared, but sometimes the generator light would promptly show up when braking at the traffic lights or so, but not to the point that the engine dies.

One more thing, when the car is stationary and I press the gas pedal the revs go up and when they go down, they sometimes go so low, that the engine get near stopping, I don't know if it's normal, probably not (it usually happens when the engine's temp is below normal)

Thanks in advance for the advice and excuse me for my strange english :)

Your English is nearly perfect, in fact if anything it's almost "too good" (as in better grammar than a native speaker).

As to the problem, we won't be able to say for sure because we don't know which engine your car has. It's probably one of these though:-

1) Idle stop is set too low.

2) Engine idle speed controller isn't functioning correctly.

3) Airflow sensor isn't functioning correctly.

Sorry, it's 1.3l MPI :) So I understand that I'd better have a professional take a look at it, because all those possibilities you have listed are not quite something I am capable of identifying/fixing :)

Thanks! :)

Hi, I had a similar problem - the revs dropping very low, a bit of a rough idle and the stalling when the clutch is depressed.

I managed to solve my problem by checking the throttle cable and tightening it (there's a small clip on the throttle cable that is easily removed and replaced with a pair of pliers).

I also gave the throttle body a bit of a clean (there are many posts on here about throttle bodies, they will run through the cleaning - I didn't remove mine just took the cover off and cleaned it carefully. IMPORTANT NOTE: When cleaning it in situ do not drop anything in through the throttle body, it will be very hard to get it out without removing the throttle body).

Give these a try, they worked for me.

At the engine end, the throttle cable is connected to a quadrant actuator, to convert the straight pull through the cable sheath into a turning action to move the throttle butterfly open when you accelerate.

With the engine idling, this quadrant will be resting against a screw. That is the throttle stop. If you turn that screw one or two turns clockwise, that should solve the problem if it's just a slow idle. Otherwise I'd say you'd be right in taking the car to a garage.
