BP Ultimate Diesel - change of heart

Featured Replies

Hullo

For a while now I've been had a "does sod-all, not worth it" philosophy about BP's Ultimate diesel, mainly due to it not doing much for performance and range considering the much higher price.

Now this change of heart is based on only one tank of the stuff, but I'm already up to 480 miles and the beeper hasn't gone off. I've not done any special long journeys (only one 150 mile round trip) and not been especially leniant on the throttle during my commuting either... On City Diesel I'd normally be looking at the car beeping at me around 400 miles and a maximum range of 450 to run dry. My maths ability isn't the best but assuming my beeper goes off at 500 miles, which I'm expecting, thats a 25% increase in range! and BP Ultimate is roughly about 7% to 10% more money, depending on where I can find it.

During this tank I also gave it some beans when I was travelling between offices, and I also reckon it's slightly improved the performance too. I'm open to reasons why this could be the case... maybe the car has run on low sulphur cr4p for it's 40K life and this tank of ultimate is giving it a bit of a flushing out? I honestly dunno but I'm now considering keeping on using it!

Well, Jason, it looks like you've tempted me to use a couple of tank fulls of this stuff to see if it makes any difference :D

Jason, I'd like to try a couple of tankfuls just to see if it's anything special but to be honest I refuse to pay another, 6p a litre when Shell's diesel in my opinion gives me a similar range, and better performance for the same money as supermarket stuff (excluding Safeway's money off offer). Currently having not done a journey longer than 40 miles I'm yet to move off full with a 180 miles since I last refueled almost a week ago.

629 miles to a tank of diesel extra for me... :P

Right Jason - can you beat 629 miles ;)

No... But then Col cheated by using the air valve trick to squeeze more juice in - I didn't. :P

He also cheated by wearing his Grandad fluffy slippers and never took the car above 2000rpm.

Oh, and if bloody shell got their act together perhaps us Southerners could get diesel extra too but they confirmed to me they've no plans to come down S.W until beginning of next year at the earliest!

And he was driving downhill.

I've managed to crank out 520 miles in my Polo sport pdtdi 100 and that was before BP ultimate was around. Those motors have a fantastic range, imagine what they'd be like with a six speed box.

I'm no where near that figure in my vrs but then I'm still stuck at the 900 miles mark need a few thousand on the clock before I get the MPG benefits.

629 on the vrs is impressive even with the vent tank full, don't think I could manage that as it seems my car has the closer ratio six speed box so it revs slightly higher in top gear.

I definately notice a difference.

Went up to brum today from Reading, and averaged at about 55mpg. Had to fill up with non-ultimate diesel on the way back, and doing the same speeds, only averaged at aroun 45mpg. That's a hell of a difference!

Ok, I did have the extra weight of a rather tasty sub, but I refuse to believe that 30kg can make 10mpg difference ;)

Question - unless you run the car virtually empty, won't whatever fuel you put in mix with what's left in the tank? So how would you notice the difference after just one visit to the pumps? :)

I keep meaning to give optimax a proper go, but it's such a hassle getting to the nearest shell (well, it's in the other direction from anywhere I normally go...)

Well - I have it on camera - my buzzer went off at 520 miles but due to my local ultimate diesel being 84.9ppl! I only put a tenners worth in which should see me through to tanking up in Exeter where its about 4p cheaper a litre! Still not bad to think I could get 560 miles out of it if I ran it bone dry.

On the BP website they recogmend you need to fill up around five times with their Ultima fuel to fush out the fuel and clean everything up before you feel the real benifits. How true this is is anyones guess!

Probably fairly true I reckon... Must resisit temptation of cheaper fuel! Must RESIST! :D

I did half a dozen tank fulls a few months ago and saw a small but noticable improvement over the first 3.

After that there was little change.

Is there different pump markings for the BP stuff, round here they are still advertising the city stuff, yet a local garage is on the list as being a stockist ???

First thing to look out for is the "ultimate" banners that the stockists have flying ususally, but even then it seems loads of ultimate unleaded only, and yet to stock the diesel stuff... Doing things by halves!

And when somewhere does stock it - the unleaded is a really pale blue coloured handle, and the ultimate diesel has a really dark blue coloured handle. - Normally both fuels are in the same pump with an "ultimate" sticker over the pump.

My local BP only had ultimate on a couple of the pumps.

The rest were standard stuff.
