Why is iTunes duplicating my songs?

Featured Replies

iTunes is duplicating my songs. It seams to be if the song title has some punctuation in it then when I import the songs from my computer into iTunes, it is making a second copy of the song. It even makes a second copy of an entire album if the album title has a punctuation mark in it.

So from having 19Gb of music on my hard drive with Windows Media Player, I have gone to 24Gb with iTunes!

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions to stop it doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

iTunes is the devils work.

HTH

I can't offer an alternative either, as just the mention of iTunes sends me purple and unable to function.

I hate itunes with a passion, it has so many quirky things that seem to make it throw a wobbly and it looks like you have found another. Its one reason why it will never be going near a pc of mine, and hence why I dont own an ipod.

I hate iTunes, but seeing as I have an iPod and I CBA using some alternative software it's a bit of a neccessary evil :thumbdwn: I only use it to transfer music though, and only transfer manually

I *think* there is a tick box in the options that allows you to choose whether you'd like itunes to 'duplicate and rename' or 'rename and edit tags' on the original track. If I remember I'll have a look when I'm home.

I know itunes converted my .wma to .mp3 and left me with two files, not too much of an issue I just deleted / moved what I didn't want. However with five gigs it could become tiresome. :D

iTunes by default is set to copy the tracks to its own folder so go into the preferences and untick the option

Correct.

But then it would duplicate all the tracks. As it is, it just duplicates any songs that have punctuation in the title and alters the punctuation slightly - to _ for example.

Steve

Have a look in the Preferences and see.

It should duplicate them all but i have no idea why its only doing those with punctuation

Ha, just looked at my itunes and its done something similar. Its created copies of various albums (seemingly randomly), and renamed the tracks

from: track name.mp3

to: track name 1.mp3

As to why I've no idea :o

You can view your duplicates songs, by going to 'view' and selecting 'show duplicates', that way you can go and delete then manually. Grr!!! :)

I've just deleted iTunes and re-installed WM version 11. And guess what?

It's ******ing up my music library as well!!

I think I'll put my Luddite hat on and copy all my MP3s to cassette.

Steve

I just converted all my songs to Mp3, left them in a sing folder and linked itunes to that folder. I think the problem is when you try to put a non-mp3 song in and it converts through itunes.

I use i tunes to transfer music to my ipod and thats it. Using the manage files myself.

I use winamp for playing mp3 music and my ipod now.

does anybody know of a better music player to download apart from media player?

Alternative to iTunes: Anapod Explorer Anapod, Notmad Explorer™ Music made easy. MP3 Software. iPod Software, iPod Backup, iTunes Alternative, iPod Transfer, iPod Management, iPod Explorer, iPod Manager, iTunes Replacement. Software for Creative MP3 Players, Creative Nomad Software, Creat Use it to copy music to, and FROM your iPod. Control how tags are handled, can 'speedsync' etc. Been using it for 3 years now and it's the best $25 I've spent.

Best player: Foobar 2000 foobar2000 Plays just about anything, can convert files between formats, many plugins available.

And mp3tag Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v1, ID3v2, APEv2) Simply brilliant program for organising the tags on your mp3's and embedding artwork into the files (when iTunes does your album artwork it actually downloads the pictures and stores them in a separate database which is easy to lose if you reinstall. Using mp3 tag you can embed the artwork into the mp3 themselves).

Old thread I know but hopefully this will be useful to someone.

(The only reason iTunes is on my PC is for the iTunes shop (only because a misguided friend gave me iTunes vouchers for a birthday pressie) and to blat/restore the iPod software)

I'd recommend Anapod as well. Very useful bit of software, much much better than itunes...

Just downloaded the free version and its great.
