Unstable! ?

Featured Replies

Just recently my vrs seem's to be really unstable on the motorway, worse then before!! It really is annoying and it's not even that windy!! Anyone notice this? Even off the motorway it seems to be hard work to drive, pulling from side to side that's what it feels like. Had tracking done little while ago at dealers and the car drive's straight and seems to corner ok, also had new arb/ bushes not long ago too. Im i going mad or is something not right?

I'm yet to get into a vRS that handles well anyway :P

Try some Eibach springs, they should stiffen the ride, and make it feel a tad better. I'm sure I read in another thread that the Dealers were offering these as upgrades, but that might be with the MKII Octavia only. Worth a shot.

Has the car done many miles? how old?

Front wishbone bushes can make a big difference especially to wheel spin and stability.I would have a look to make sure thay arn't split.

The car is on a 51 plate, and only done 55k so not high mileage. Another thing i have'nt once seen the traction control light come on, how easy/hard should this be coming on?

I find this at times, like today it was all over the place. Most off the times it sticks well.

Octy mk1 vRS (2004)

The mark 1 Octy is prone to the Anti Roll bar bushes disintegrating which can damage the ARB. This happened to my 51 plate Octy vRS after 30K miles! A short trip to the dealers, and a new set of bushes and ARB, and handling was totally transformed. It's well worth looking into. The state of the roads in South Yorks was the main cause I reckon. I had a front spring snap at the same time.

Also check your front tyres as this problem can ruin a good set of tyres very quickly.

How worn are your front tyres? If the tread is getting down a bit (3mm or less) the car will tend to follow every lump and bump in the road. It can be quite disconcerting. A new set of boots will transform things. Mine did the same until I put a new set of Toyos on.

It shouldn't be that hard to light it up at any time really wet/dry

Ummm never see the light come on! Guess it's not working? may have to look into that. Yeah tryes are starting to get a bit low i have contisport tyres and have heard these ware before the bars, so maybe this could be part of the reason.

IMO the ASR light very rarely comes on maybe its my granny driving! I've only ever had this flash on when its been wet and trying to pull away quick from a set of traffic lights.

Give her loads of revs, put in first gear and let clutch out fast and see if it comes on.:D

i wondered if it was my imagination, obviously not, Got a TDi with 117k on the clock, at country road speeds it is fine, but 80-90 on the motorway it tends to wander, or feel like it is. I am guessing the knocking i get at low speeds is the ARB bushes. Would this account for the wandering, or should i be looking at other things as well?

There was a post recently about Octavia's being blown around on the motorway

in high winds, but the combi seemed to be less prone to it...
