Weird tappets

Featured Replies

My timing chain needs doing, but I have noticed that when starting from cold the chain is pretty quiet and the tappets are fairly silent.

However, after a mile or so the chain much more audible and the tappets seem much louder. It was like this before and after a recent oil change.

Has anyone else experienced this?

i should imagine it's because the clearances are a little tight, when the engine warms it naturally closes the clearances down due to expansion.

i had this on my felicia... you couldnt really hear the chain apart from the odd rattle here and thre but once the engine was up to temp it would rattle about like a gud-un... maybe something to do with the oil being "runnier" when warm so the chain frees up a bit and starts to rattle aboout.

Simple answer to this is get tinkering and change that chain and do your valve clearnces... mine is sooooo much quieter now!!

Good call Phil. Multigrade oil doesn't get thicker when it's hot; it's just that it gets thinner more slowly than monograde does.

I had same issue before my chain was done also.

The only real solution is to get the chain done to eliminate it

tappets are 6mm hot or cold

I wonder if you could adapt the Fabia set up and run hydraulic tappets.

tappets are 6mm hot or cold

you sure?? that sounds a bit excessive to me

should be 0.25mm for the inlets

and 0.20mm for the exhaust

the engine wont even start with 6mm clearance on on the tappets, after all the cam lift is only 8.1mm on those engines so 6mm clearances would only lift the valve off the seat 2.1mm :o

you must mean 0.006" which is roughly 0.20mm

sorry meant 6 thou

Valve clearances in Haynes for 1.3 are

Inlet 0.25mm

Exhaust 0.20mm
