Why is Fuel xx.9p?

Featured Replies

Why do petrol companies still insist on selling fuel to .9 of a pence? I can see no reason or justification for doing so! :(

Have often wondered this myself, but have never come to any logical conclusion!

It's the same mentality that prices things at 9.99p

It has very little relevance these days , but surprisingly large numbers of people do mentally round things down and think they are cheaper.

Part of it was so that the amount would always be a random number so that a till would always have to be opened - i.e. no giving the right money and cashier pocketing it without having to open the till.

Does seem kind of irrelevant these days though, especially with most people filling up with a round amount anyway. :)

Ive been beaten to it but will still go ahead. 99p sounds cheap compared to

Do they?

What's the point in that then?

I just fill the car up when it's empty

 That's exactly the historical reason for not using round amounts. Nothing to do with making things look cheaper as, well, it doesn't!

Rob.

Me too, although there is the challenge to get it to a nice round number at the first click of the pump!

I go for a round amount, but that's cos I tend to pay for petrol in cash and don't want a pocket full of shrapnel :o

my own petrol pump challenge is to hold the the pump at WOT and stop bang on the 45/50 quid I'm putting in without going over - no quick little 5p jabs allowed at the end :D

I fill up until it clicks off then top up to the next complete litre for maximum points on my card.

I just hope the Diso's tank fill's before i get arm ache holding the nozzle :D
