Intercooler/EGR pipe keeps coming off?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, on the picture below you can see a black pipe to the left of the engine. Where the joint is just to the left of the barcode, the pipe coming from the allard power pipe keeps on blowing off from the bottom when driving hard. I've managed to push the pipe back in twice now by removing the metal clip and putting it back on but this doesn't seem to be very substantial. Is there anything else I can do to make this joint more secure, or has anyone else done anything to stop this from happening? Thanks in advance

I just replaced mine (pre-crash :o ) - worth buying a new clip, once it's given up, it kinda looses it's spring quality.

I found that too actually, the clip doesn't seem to sit as flush as it used to. Once you replaced it did you have any problems with it after?

Na..... I had a similar problem coming back from the lakes..... make shift repair got me back :) When you disconnect the pipe there should be 2-3 raised bits of metal that the metal clip goes around, once these are sheared off it's time for a new bend ........ about

In my case the turbo side of that pipe blew off (clip snapped), which in turn damaged the aluminium lug that is supposed to hold the hose in place.

In the Allard one the turbo end is jubilee clipped so that side should hold nicely.

It's worth checking if the lugs on your pipe are damaged, if so I'd order a new bit of pipe/hose + a new clip, that ought to sort it :)

I only drove the car with the new hose/clip on it for about 50 miles before I had the crash, but the pipe appeared firmly in place again, whereas before it moved a fair bit (and leaked boost). The smoke I had during spoolup had virtually gone again too.

Hopefully I'll find out soon what the situation is with my car, and I'll be able to give you a more useful response :D

I think there was a thread on this recently and Jason recommended marine-grade jubilee clips which help the hose much more securely. Failing that, just get a new one from Skoda dealer :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Will order a new hose/clip on Monday. I wonder how the marine-grade jubilee cips work though, will try doing a search

I could be wrong but I think it is for replacement silicon hose or in your case the other end of the affected pipe that joins on the egr blanking valve..... some jubilee clips can fail but the marine style clips hold excelently...... check out allards as they have some canny ones

If it's where the pipe joins the egr replacement pipe, I ended up using an exhaust bracket thing. It's a 'U' shaped piece of metal with a thread on both ends, and a thicker piece that's slightly curved to go over the open end. Haven't had that pipe come off at all since I did that.

I would have thought that would have been ok :) mind you, with a new FMIC and a replacement bit of alloy for the top pipe crossing the engine bay mixed with a few of these shiny metal tings....... nice :D:thumbup:
