first of all has a fabia 1.4 comfort manual , petrol got timing belt or a timing chain?

i have a fabia 1.4 , 2002 plate and its dne abt 45k miles, its been giving me so much probs. its driving ok but thre is a noise in the engine like a rattling noise, antime the engine is running and i took it to the mech and he said its the timing chain and its going to cost me abt 600pounds just to change it. pls help i just want to get rid of it now, anyone had any similar probs:confused:

If it's the 8v it's a timing chain and if it's a 16v I think it's a timing belt.

thanks for the advice but if there is a prob with the timing belt can i still drive it for long dist before i get it fixed?

What engine is it?, if the boot badge says MPi it has a chain, if it says 16 V it has two belts.

The MPi is a development of the old Skoda engine going back decades. Chain kits are not dear they were less than

thanks very much. its a 1.4 MPi. i was told it would take abt 3 days to get the chain changed and it will cost abt 600 pounds. i just thk am being ripped off . and also worried if it has been fixed ASAP or i can use it for a while.

That sounds like a rip off to me , get a 2nd opinion on the noise 1st then if it needs work , take it to a small independent garage and have the work done. Ask family and friends which garages they use , if they are happy with them , maybe? Ps 99.9% certain your car has a chain and is the 8V model.
