vRS T FSI Estate or 2.0TDI L&K DSG Estate?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just signed up and it's my first post, so please be gentle :)

Time has come around for me to choose a new company car which is under a contract hire agreement with one of the big lease car providers.

I have a budget and can have anything I fancy as long as it falls within the monthly budget and I've been considering either the

vRS T FSI Estate specced as follows Black Magic Paint, Dual Zone, Rear Park assist, Sunset glass, Maxidot, Cruise.

This spec is bang on the monthly limit but I would also fancy 18"s and that would mean dropping some of the other options. I might be able to squeeze 18's out of the lease company if I drop Cruise.

2.0TDi L&K DSG Estate specced as follows: Black Magic Paint, Onyx Black interior and Sunset Glass.

Has anyone else gone through this exercise of deciding between a fully loaded executive trimmed Octy and the more overtly sporting drive of the vRS?

I like the idea of having a vRS with the Petrol turbo engine because I love driving my other car which is a lightly modified VX22O Turbo so I can indulge in my A/B road hooning when I fancy :)

However on the other hand the "lazy" nature of the DSG L&K with all the luxury trimmings also really appeals.

On the vRS:

Visually how much of a difference is their between the 17's and 18's?

Does the ride suffer much on 18's compared to the 17's?

How do the two compare on fuel consumption based on a mix of motorway, town, in other words how far are they away from the manufacturers official but never obtainable figures?

In terms of BIK tax liabilty there is nothing in it, the only difference is the personal fuel cost and personal mileage per annum is approx 6000 out of a total annual mileage of approx 23k.

Look forward to hearing your comments on how the 2 cars compare, what people view as "must have" options on the vRS.

I have access to the Lease companies website so I can run quotes to see the total cost of the car based on various specs:thumbup:

Thanks

John

I drove both cars (well the diesel VRS) and in the end chose the L&K. Went for this as it had more toys and most things as Standard!

I've personally not noticed much of a difference from going from 16's to 18's! So I wouldn't worry too much unless your ears and back are super sensitive!

The main differance with the Alloys is the looks. the 18s fill the arches a lot more.

You should probably expect an average of around 32mpg from the TFSi and a bit more when driven sensibley. When I went to GTi International this year I almost had 40mpg on the readout, that was with a little bit of spirited driving and mainly cruise control at around 85.

If you were lucky enough to find a TFSi in the UK and could have it registered before the 30th September you'll get the 18's included free.

Regarding the PD140 engine with DSG box fuel consumption, we have two of these in our household, an Octy II Ambiente and a VW Golf GT TDi and both are averaging 46-48mpg over lots of mixed driving - and neither of us exactly 'hang about' ;) on a gentler run (taking aged in-laws for a drive round Herefordshire) I got over 60mpg

On the vRS you'll also get the dual zone climate thrown in, as that and the 18" wheels are both free upgrades until 30th September (or depending how many they sell, sometime after that).

You also get the Jumbo Box (central armrest with cool box below and aux in socket for mp3 player) and rear electric windows, so all in all it's not a bad deal.

I'm not aware of any freebie deals on the L&K.

I'll also add that the ride on 18" wheels is not as bad as I had feared and nothing like as harsh as a Leon FR on 17" wheels that I test drove and needed the services of chiropractor afterwards (not really, but it should be a standard feature for anyone who opts for the Leon!)

The L&K doesn't come with any freebies but for the price the spec is pretty darned good, illuminated interior door handles, leather seats (electrically adjustable drivers seat), xenons, ESP, maxidot, auto lights/wipers - the list goes on and on.

And it's not as if i'm biased, SWMBO drives a vRS TDI :D

If you go down the L&K route, be brave and opt for the light leather!

I've had my vRS TFSI estate for 6 months and 16,000 miles. According to the computer I've averaged 27.2 mpg over the last 98 hours at an average speed of 39mph. Driven sedately and not going over 75-80mph on long runs, gives me around 34mpg but if I wanted to drive that way I'd have bought the 140 diesel and a pair of slippers  The TFSI engine is a belter and it swung me away from diesel (had a Fabia vRS and test drove the Octavia VRS TDI) and I haven't regretted it one bit despite the more frequent trips to petrol stations.

I've had my TFSI for 5 weeks and I've done about 1300 miles in it.

My overall mpg counter shows 33.4mpg right now. I get 33-35mpg on a motorway run to work or 34-39mpg if I take the slower single carriageway road. If you drive it hard the mpg really drops fast though :P

I've not done a fill to fill measurement of mpg but I expect it to be a bit lower maybe about 30mpg over all.

My mates Mazda 6 diesel (140) gets 40mpg so I don't think the TFSI is uneconomical for what it is. I looked at a V6 diesel A4 before the Skud and its mpg on paper wasn't much better.

I love it to bits though, not so keen on the dealers right now but the car is great. I got 18" wheels as a free upgrade, I don't find the ride too harsh but personally I wouldn't have paid to upgrade them if they weren't free. I added maxidot to my order too late and missed out so get it in up front. The standard display is ok but maxi would have been much nicer.

Thanks for all the replies so far, sorry I didn't respond last night, was out playing in the VX220 Turbo:D

This is what I expected, high 20's to low 30's. One of the attractions of the TFSI is the flexible torquey engine. I've tended to find the modern day TDI's, particularly the VW group PD engines to really wallop the torque in and are not that progressive like common rail diesels.

That's the attraction of the L&K, lots of toys. Good to hear that there is little difference in ride on the 18's. The reason I asked is that the VAG Group haven't got an excellent reputation for ride quality when their cars are on big wheels and sports suspension. They often end up being fidgety. However good news that the Octy doesn't appear to suffer and this shouldn't be a problem for me having got the VX220 as a toy and previously a Westfield and a 993 Targa.

I'm not due my car until November / December so the offer will have finished by then :thumbdwn: Hopefully they will extend it but I'll work on the basis that the offer isn't available and if it is then it is a bonus.

The L&K certainly does have an impressive spec, love the light leather dstev2000, really lifts the ambience of the interior, you may have swung the interior trim colour if I have an L&K.

Maybe I could have the new 1.8T FSI in L&K trim. In black with the the new Sputnik alloys the L&K looks very very nice.

Oh flippin heck, too many choices & decisions to make

I'm not (yet) aVRS estate owner but I have test driven a TFSI hatch and estate both had 18" wheels. On both drives I did notice a tendancy to torquesteer a little overtaking slower cars when booting it over the centre line of the road. I haven't yet tested on std 17's to see if there are any improvements.

Can any owners comment on this ?

BTW

The VXT is a great car - had one myself for 18months and miss it loads.

Just don't expect the same level of driver involvement in the VRS as the VXT

Hi, I have owned a new vRS diesel estate (black) for 3 weeks now - yay!. Here (NZ) the vRS is standard with most options incl 18" wheels. Mileage with half and half round town stop-start driving and "spirited" country driving is 35 mpg. No problems with handling
