Graphics card resolutions?

Featured Replies

Ok, so having been away from hardware purchases for some time, I am now looking at a 22" wide screen monitor. These generally have a native resolution of 1680 X 1050 pixels. How does this work out with graphics cards? I cannot seem to find any that will output this resolution in AGPx8 format.

What do you folks who use 22" wide screens have in the way of graphics cards?

If I have to end up building a new machine to find a supporting card, I will actually spend less going to a 24"+ monitor!

Why is nothing simple?

Pretty much all modern graphics cards will support 1680 x 1050 as long as it is written in as driver supported,as for me i have an 8800 gtx using the same resolution:)

When you say driver supported, you mean selectable from the screen driver menu I take it. Looking through the outputs of many cards, I cannot see this as a supported output. Need to do more research before committing the cash.

Yes written into the drivers, i can definately say in respect of nvidia that resolution has been available since the 90 series driver for the 7800,7900,8800(possibly earlier) and i would assume that ati would be no different.

There are still some games coming out which do not support it but there are generally hacks available to change that.

If memory serves me corectly you will only see what resouloutions are available for the monitor you are currently using (in display properties, if thats where you are looking). So when you connect up your new monitor, the resoloution should be available, if not auto adjust.

It worked for me when i installed a new HP 21" widescreen monitor with the same reseloution and my vid card is about 4 years old!! And i didnt have to update the drivers

You are right, if the graphisc card supports the resolution it really is just plug and play, although you may need to add a monitor inf(driver) to get xp/vista to dispense with the generic plug and play monitor in the display properties

I used an AGP GeForce 6600GT at 1680x1050 on one screen and 1280x1024 on the other
