have you seen the new suggested way of driving a normal petrol car economically?

alledgely you have to use fulll throttle EVERY time you accelerate, then come straight off and just let the car run (clutch up of course), then use FULL throttle ect ect

the theory is, the engine is running most efficiently on full throttle, and on overrun, the computer cuts the fuel supply to the engine off completely... apparently it works!.... not the right method for a turbo deisel tho lol...

"buy a more effcient car with a smaller engine" who's gonna do that then?

I do find having a mpg display in the car does help me when i want to do my bit, but only when i want to do my bit ;)

Anyone found their sweet spot yet?

So many double entendres, so little time! :D

If you are interested in finding out about more fuel-eifficent, 'green' cars, I found this article with a guide to the top ten greenest and worst ten cars:

Green Car Buyers? Guide ? find out the greenest cars and the worst gas guzzler

There's some great cars in the top ten, and while they don't compare to the ten worst in terms of style, speed.... They also don't compare in price!

So if you're looking to spend only a reasonable amount of money on a car, why not go for one that does it's bit in preventing the total destruction of our environment, like my Toyota Yaris, which by the way is a great car and according to the above, the greenest too!

Strange how the Yaris doesn't appear in the top ten for lowest emissions or most fuel efficent though.

I think I'll stick to killing the planet  in my current car.:D

ST Planet Killer Edition ;)

Somebody should tell this lot that emissions are not the only output from a car and making new cars/engines to replace those knackered by jerky on/off accelerator actions will produce far more than driving a car normally never mind carefully.

Maybe save some metal and replace the whole accelerator system with a simple switch?

And the fact that global warming is a lie....

Economy Driving Need Not Mean Slow Shock! “It’s not about crawling around,” said the analyst, “but conserving momentum.”

Of course oldies knew this ages back. My Dad says the best way to drive is not brake needlessly or harsh if you can avoid it. That said I can get 42mpg from my little Felly :D

Yeah it is strange how the Yaris appears no-where in those other lists then pops up in no1. Must have to do with an overall thing rather than one specific area.

And the fact that global warming is a lie....

Really? So your saying the government are lying to us all?

No surely they wouldn't do such a thing and tax us needlessly??:D

Technically it's not a lie... it's just an unproven theory they seem to be selling as fact.:thumbdwn:

I see the toyota prius in that list... It doesn't mention the massive enviromental devestation at the nickol mines they use to make the batteries, and that the nickol travelles accross various oceans on polluting ships before its is a finished battery... lol...

Some of Volkswagen's 1.4TDI's are more economical than the Prius, not to mention cheaper and not as ugly

And here's the next "Big thing" in environmentaly friendly cars: Honda FCX Clarity - Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle - Official Web Site

Actually going on sale soon too!, though i'm not convinced. Fair play to them for making it reasonably good looking though

The VAG 1.9 TDis are more economical than a Pious on extra-urban work.

As for the FCX, where does the hydrogen come from? Presently, it's normally from cracking HC fuels. Draw your own conclusions from that.

Ok perhaps I was over simplifying the issue...

What I should have said is that, if there is any change in the earth's temperature then there's nothing we as humans can do about it :) (Sources: Global Warming: A closer look at the numbers - Global Warming Awareness Blog 5 Good Arguments Why GlobalWarming is NOT due to Man-made Carbon Dioxide)

Taxing us for "global warming" is like taxing us every time it rained, or snowed :(

Anything which shows that we're not responsible is hidden from us - only "pro" global warming stories are shown on the news etc

Agreed. That's quite apart from how, based on FOE figures about how much CO2 the planet can generate/tolerate, and the projected 2050 world population of 9 billion (presume 9E9), by that time we would need to have personal carbon footprints of 300kg per year, which requires reverting to literally medievil lifestyles.

...if there is any change in the earth's temperature then there's nothing we as humans can do about it...

Perhaps another case of over-simplifying? ;)

Even if causes for temperature change are complex it doesn't follow that we cannot take measures.

****-sure attitudes on one side does not legitimate the very same attitudes on the other... it may well be that environmentalists over-simplify, but there are no proofs allowing us to say that CO emissions have no impact whatsoever on climate change. And we can do something about them (even if we cannot do a thing about solar activity).

It's not my fault that there is snow and ice on Swedish winter roads, but that doesn't mean that I don't have to drive more carefully.

But even if we leave climate out of the discussion, petrol prices alone give good arguments for economic driving. Even if fuel taxes were to be completely abolished, a global increase in oil consumption (China, India...) will make prices rocket in a not-so-distant future.

Preaching to the choir... :)

I must admit my comments where VERY tongue in cheek. :D

These hydrogen powered cars... only output is 'harmless' water vapour? hhmm... now what is the largest greenhouse gas again?:D

If you're not careful arec Barrwin and the Film Actors guild will be talking global warming and hybrid cars again!!!!

Oil consumption is increasing from Eastern places like India and China so thats going to have to an impact on supplies. at least no more tankers have run aground recently.

I agree. I only drive more economically to save my wallet, not the environment
