How NOT to stall a Leon 1.9TDi...

Featured Replies

Hi!

Alright, daft question time...

At work I have 2 vehicles, a Renault Kangoo (for computer installs - I'm a network engineer lol) and when not needing a van I have a Leon 1.9TDi as a runabout. Here's the daft bit, it has one of those 'plank' accelerator pedals, like some of the big Octys, and I have a habit of stalling it :( . Is there anything short of revving its nuts off when I set away that will stop me driving like a learner?!?! Or am I just not pressing the plank right - told you it was a daft question!

:D

Well, I have not managed to stall the octavia 2.0TDI. mine will pull away from 0 mph, wth no application of throttle if the clutch is released gently.

Best stop letting the clutch out like I do on my Fabia then - clunk!

Sounds like not enough revs - easy way to find out is to put the car in first and gently lift the clutch with no throttle applied until you reach the biting point. Then gently feed in the revs until the car starts to try and pull forward. If the car is pulling forward with no revs then you should be able to fully engage the clutch before starting to accelerate... this is how I've found most of the VAG cars...

Could it be there is quite a difference in the height of the biting point between the Fabia and the Leon?

Maybe your left foot is going into auto-pilot!

General technique if you dont know the car is to rev up to 1500 rpm (petrol or diesel) and let the clutch come up gently, balancing the revs at about 1500 rpm until the clutch is fully up.

But as already mentioned, you generally have anti-stall and at very least on the flat in 1st gear in virtually any car you should be able to get it rolling without stalling without applying the accelerator at all.

That said in the Matiz I had for a week it had auto-stall :P i.e. it would stall itself out of gear, with only radio playing... Reported that as a bit of a problem :o
