Pipercross users check your air filter.

Featured Replies

Not wishing to start a "who's is the best filter" debate but I have just cleaned my Pipercross filter and there was quite a bit of very fine grit on top of it when I opened the airbox.

This is not a great find really, it has been fitted since December and has done 8000 miles.

It was fitted and sealed OK, I checked mindfull of the problems you get with Green cotton filter's seals being a bit on the small side.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe with the extreme rainy start to summer, I have done a fair few miles on partially flooded motorways and maybe grit and fine particles have been carried into the airbox with the water.

Can some of you other Pipercross users check your cars and let me know what you find.

Well I've just put mine in and its done 100 miles so I'm no use

One thing I noticed however was that on the pipercross the seals don't have a lip like they did on my corsa... and it didn't seem to sit very well....

Oh what I have just ordered one of these are they no good?

TBH I would clean aftermarket filters sooner than 8k anyway.

I'm not saying they are good or bad yet. Lets see what other people find when they check theirs :)

Yeah maybe 5k would have been better. I know for next time.

I clean the factory fitted one quickly once a month with a vaccy and around the air box, why you ask? well it helps with performance and economy and if something has damaged the filter its better to find out this way than when the car goes bang (or on the 20k service).

Mines fine, but I check mine regularly out of habit (unless it's absolutely caked I don't bother cleaning it though).

If you've got dirt making it's way to the clean side of the filter then wipe it down and keep a close eye on it. If it happens again then get in touch with the manufacturer for advice - they won't want their products to harm your engine any more than you do.

Isn't the top side of the filter the dirty side? If so any filter would have ended up with grit on it surely and it's nothing to do with the brand of filter as it is obviously doing it's job. Worry if it is on the clean side as it could then get into the engine.

I checked mine this weekend and found just the same problem after 5K. To be honest, i didn't like the look of the thing when it arrived through the post - a very large box with a rather small and cheap feeling filter inside and no cleaning instructions. Spent ages fiddling around getting it to seat what i thought was properly. Looked at it closely when i took it out and the fine grit is on the edge seals as well, suggesting the thing doesn't seal at all well. The seals do look weeedy compared to the OEM filter. Bit of a rip off as far as i'm concerned - can't remember how much it was, but it wasn't cheap. Original OEM filter has gone back in, just hope not too much crap found it's way right through into the engine. Might have a small but satisfying bonfire of the pipercross one - rubbish if you ask me.

Top is clean in the Fabia vRS, not sure about any other models.

I agree I just bought mine from Awesome GTi cost me

Was going to say this. Air is sucked down through the filter and so the top will always gather the dirt (unless you fit the filter upside down!). Usually clean mine every 5k miles....

On the Fab the intake for the turbo is on the top half of the box, so it sucks from the bottom up through the filter then out the top!!!!!

when you open the top of the box the top of the filter should be clean, if not, the filter is not doing its job!!!!!!

Sounds like my Fabia had a problem with the Green then as it was always the top which was dirty :(

Chris

I had a pipercross on mine for 50k, only cleaned it once, and everything was fine :)

Hmmm..... I'll keep it on for about 5k and then take a look at it I think

i have been running a pipercross filter for 5k now and checked a couple of weeks ago and it looked brand new on the top.

will check again later and report back

I'm running the OEM paper filter while the pipercross dries out after it's wash.

I don't think it was a seal issue but I have got a roll of fairly high density self adhesive foam strip, so I will put a layer of that around the top part of the airbox to try and get a bit more compression on the filter seal. Saying that I did check it realy carefully when I fitted it and it seamed to be sealed all the way round.

Has anyone else got the same issue with a Green Cotton filter?

cotton type filters are apparantly worse than foam for this sort of thing, especially after they've been cleaned a few times

Hi

I took mine out and gave it a clean

All did seem fine

But I did a fine spay of the oil on it before I put it in , so that could possiblly help:confused:

I thought you said that these new pipercross filters didnt need oiling?

They don't, but every little helps :)

As well as acting as a wicking agent, oil causes the foam to swell, opening the cells to increase airflow.

Mmmm as has been said , they dont

But the reson that they dont , is because of the so called problem with the MAF

I dont believe that at all as my MAF failed with an OEM filter in

So I put a tad of oil on the filter

Sarah

Cant understand how people are having a problem fitting these filters. Mine took me all of 5 minutes (however then i did spend 45 minutes hunting round the engine for a rubber bung which came off the engine cover and dropped down inside. Car was on axle stands undertray off the lot:O )
