Help - box on top of battery with fuses in it

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have just had a problem with my octavia vrs, i bought a new battery and when changing the battery i noticed that one of the fuses in the box on top of the battery had kind of melted off, there are 5 fuses, 4 red ones then a black one on the left, the black one on the left isn't joined on, the metal connector seems to have melted/corroded.

Does anyone know what could have caused this to happen, and also can i do any damage by driving it 9 miles in the morning to the nearest skoda garage?

I appreciate any help or advice given,

thankyou

Nicola & Chris.

Do you mean the fuse which has the black cable connected to it? I believe that is a 50A fuse for the secondary air pump relay.

yes thats the one, the black wire has come away, the metal bit connecting it seems to have melted, will i be ok to drive the car 9mile in the morning to take it to the nearest skoda garage?

Can you undo the bolt. if so u may be able to crimp the wire of and attach it to a new connector.

little bit of diy may save you dealership prices

 i could do but i have two small children and would like to know that it was safe for them, hence why i am asking if i am ok to drive it,

those metal bits look like a spanner, well half of my spanner is missing so i have nothing to connect it to, cheers for the advice

hi i have just found that i have the same problem, It does not look like it has come lose and lost its connection.

But the black wire where it connects. The nut/bolt looks like its been heating up.

Its a little hard to explain. its almost like its melted slightly. It has left a white residual on top of the cover. Anyone else got this problem???

What will it cause to go wrong?

Yes that is exactly what happened to ours,

we took it to skoda at halifax and they fixed it for

mines a standard stereo, was a cop car at one point tho so they may have had extra stuff connected.

I think its a skoda thing. Didn't even notice untill i took the cover off batt

very worrying

I don't want to worry you even more but ours went extremely quickly, it drained the old battery in an instant, so we bought a new battery (before we knew of this wire melting) and it managed to drain a brand new battery in one day, when i took it into skoda they said i would be ok to drive it but not far, so i took the car home (10 min drive) then i had to go out to copley in the afternoon, got there (15min drive) and the car died, a guy put jump leads across for me and off i went, no more than three mins down the road and the car juddered all the lights came on and it came to a stop (on a blooming roundabout of all places) jump started it again (with help from workmen on side of road) and took it straight to skoda and told them to fix it, all in all i broke down twice in the space of 5 minutes, it wasnt a nice experience and i would take yours to the garage and get it checked out, i arent by any means saying that this will happen to you i am just reporting what ours did on friday, hope you get it sorted, am off to bed now but let us know what your dealer says please as it might give me an insight into why mine did it, seen as though they are playing the pointing finger game

whats the part i need? i wanna do it myself?

one sec i'll just find the receipt, and yes you can do it yourself, its just ours broke down so i had no other option but to dealer it as chris was in leeds :(

as per receipt it says:

parts used : 1J0937617D - Fuse Plate - qty1 - 34.82

N10424903 - Fuse - qty1 - 1.83

hope that helps

youre a star mate,

and always on this at all hours like me:thumbup:

 i'm just always on 7-11

and no probs its nice to be able to help, its a lot cheaper for you cos you have found the problem before your cars broke and its a 2 minute job to change it

That black wire is the alternator wire.

Quite often burns out if the alternator starts over charging, only seems to happen on the 1.8T's. I have changed a few cables and alternators because of it.

what should i do then lummox? at the moment the car works fine just noticed looked slightly burnt at this point?

should i other to replace anything?

just picked all the bits up and got home. I've just noticed the fuse is a 50 amp

my existing is a 110amp just letting you know nshaunluke, you may want to check they have fitted the correct fuse

now gfot to wait till tuesday for the 110amp

What muppet at VAG designed a car with a fuse box on top of a battery?

Batteries give off acid fumes when they are charged - no wonder you lot have corroded fuses. Luckily my Superb doesn't have this wonderful detail - the CCM electronics just get filled up with rainwater instead.

Now that the Japanese have diesels to match VAG's units, they will take them to the cleaners.

Would it not make a difference that the batteries are of a sealed maintenance free type?

If you really sealed a battery, it would explode when you charge it because charging involves the partial electrodecomposition of the electrolyte - that's why they bubble when on charge. "Sealed" is a marketing term; they mean it doesn't all spill out at once if you tip it over. The battery is vented and acid fumes are inevitably carried over as the battery gasses.

Try leaving a bit of blue litmus paper stuck to the top af a car battery for a few days.

bit OT but aam i ok to upgrade the battery then? i.e if it still fits but higher output as ill be fitting a large stereo and will probably upgrade the alt wires to 4gauge. im not gonna end up blowing everything am i?

So even the vent tube on the side wouldnt direct all the gasses down I guess.

job sorted look at the old one !!!!

i noticed on seat forum it tends to be the green 30amp fuse that melts.

However mine was the large black wire.

Its a very common Fault, yes black wire to altenator quick fix is to connect direct to battery after all why put a fuse in the altenator output max current set by regulator in Altenator.

That probably explains why they have a 110A fuse connected to a wire that's designed for 70/90A. I thought it was really odd, but this kind of makes sense.
