Windscreen Repair or Replacement

Featured Replies

Well, ive managed to pick up a nice stone chip on my windscreen on the way to work thismorning. the actual chip is tiny but theres a crack about 10mm long behind it.

can it be repaired or is it a replacement job?

And what are peoples experience of using autoglass?

Col,

if there's a crack then it'll develop into a bigger one....replacement I reckon.

If it's like a white dot...if you know what I mean...then it can be fixed.

Sounds like a new screen, dont worry though the replacement will be just as good as the first. When my octy one needed replacement I went to autoglass and the one they supplied was made by the same company as the original.

What was the fitting service like? did they fit it well, and did it look as if it had never been replaced?

I used Autoglass twice for my last Octy....apart from ordering the wrong colour tint the first time...their work quality is fine and you would really be able to tell.

IIRC Octy screen are bonded so after the screen is fitted you can't drive for at least 45mins.

Don't know if this is the same for the Furby.

Colin, I'd sell the car and buy a proper RS :P

Used Autoglass for several screen on mine. No worries at all.

I believe AutoGlass will fit an identical screen to what you had before... Be prepared for a nice clean inside of the screen too - surprised me how clear it was (and how mucky the inside of the cracked screen must have been. )

(sounds like a replacement to me too... :( )

and yes, furby screen is bonded too - I was told I could drive straight away but it was advised not to for an hour, and if I had to not to go over XX mph... I can't remember the XX speed, I think it was 60?

I had a SXi Corsa previously with slight tints, and the replacement windscreen was completely clear (similar problem to SkodiRS I guess) so keep an eye out when they're fitting it.

I did a 'Jason' 4 weeks later, so never got around to sorting this problem

wahoo! - there is someone else then...

Nice to see my name has been immortalised in a car accident verb.

MOT wise if the crack is bigger than 10mm and in zone A of screen it should fail the MOT........most cracks in screens cannot be repaired they can only be stopped from spreading...........IMHO Autoglass are the guys to use my vrs screen was replaced at 2 months old, the chap who fitted it showed me an inch gap at the bottom of the old one that had not been sealed properly from factory.

Phil

Used Autoglass twice now, once for a replacement screen and then for a chip repair. I had one similar to yours, a chip with a crack behind it, they fixed it up a treat (FOC on my insurance). If you can take the car in to their depot and get them to assess it they'll tell you if it can be fixed or not.

Thump the area of the crack with the heel of your hand, the crack will almost certainly spread. Consider asking for a shade band screen as the replacement. Autoglass fitted one on an Octavia I had - the slight extra cost didn't bother the insurers.

Doesn't it have one as standard ?

Good question! The Octavia I had, didn't. My wife's Fabia Elegance doesn't.

Had a windscreen failure on my last Fabia and a nice big chip just before trade in as well! :(

Autoglass did a good job and you'd never tell it had been changed apart from some extra sealant visible behind the VIN no. at the bottom of the screen.

Good point about the tinted band a the top as only Elegances and vRSs have them IIRC..

Autoglass did an excellent job 2 years ago in replacing my Senator windscreen then the back window of my 4X4 Estate. The latter was done at my home by an Autoglass fitter with a van.

Fabia Elegance's don't have a shade band - hoping for a cracked windscreen soon. ;)

Bugger :(

They turned up. they said it could be repaired but wouldnt be totally invisible, and its right in my line of sight.

soo i opted for a new screen.. but turns out the new screen had a green shadeband, and mine was gray. so is being rebooked for tues :(

Unlucky that. I deffo got an identical screen, but this wasn't with Autoglass - t'was some other local firm that I got in before I realised I should have used autoglass...

Good to see how it was done and I even helped the bloke with those sticky handle things to place the screen in right... It's still stuck in, even if the rest of the screen is totally shattered!
