Steering wheel change.

Featured Replies

I love my 2001 Octavia 110 to bits, but my only bugbear with the car is the dismal steering wheel,as its to thin to grip properly and feels uncomfortable over long journeys.

Has anyone any experience of changing the wheel to something a bit better, and is it poss to fit a wheel from a vRS?

You could change to the vRS one, ut you would also need the airbag.

how about the feasibility of fitting a TT wheel/airbag to Octavia?

I would think it would work ok.

Ive fitted a Golf R32 wheel to my vRS but that use's the same airbag.

cool.. my main question is with the taper/spline/bolt on the steering column being compatible. I can sort out the airbag connector if that is different.

I would think so. Don't think the airbag connector would be a problem either if the slip ring is the same.

How easy is it to change over a steering wheel with an airbag?

I know it's probably best to disconnect the battery to make sure it doesn't go off, not sure even if that's necessary, but what else is involved like screws, circlips?

My Passat came with a 4 spoke bog standard VW steering wheel but I would quite like to upgrade to the leather 3 spoke one it this an easy change over? I don't have the audio controls either.

Not even sure if my airbag would fit, really haven't looked into it yet but thought folks on here would have a fair idea.

A straight swap with pretty much anything from the VAG range. :)

As Ross says though, make sure you get the correct airbag.

What tools are required and what precautions for the airbag are needed?

Cheers Stu, I'm guessing that you can pick up an M12 Spline tool from Halfrauds or any hardware shop.

Will disconnecting the battery affect the stereo, not sure if I have the code but I can get it from the dealer, but if the change over is quick enough will it keep it's code for a couple of minutes?

Draper do a nice set of them - that's what I use.

If it's the OEM radio then it should retain the code.
