The great cam cover colour code thread. :D With pics

Featured Replies

Well, pics to follow. Have already kicked off the great cam cover respray operation with a damn good clean - degreasing, and 1 coat or primecoat. Will get some pics when I next nip out

to follow. ;)

Sounds good - My car is black so might not benefit much from a respray, but interesting to see how it ends up looking :)

Ok. First two pics are of very clean cam cover, which has had 1 coat of primer.

And this is it with another layer of primecoat - Reckon I'm gonna give it around 6 layers of primer as there might be temp issues with this cover in daily use, so want to get a really good surface for the paint to adhere to. :)

I'm a little gutted it's so windy today as I found a couple of bits of "debris" had got on to the cover inbetween coats. I may have to mock up a windbreak for it....

oooh this sounds good, will be good to see the finished product, guessing you binned the engine cover then?

Looks good :)

It had no engine cover. I might leave the primecoat(s) :D to dry overnight before actually painting. It says to leave at least 1 hour but best results should leave it overnight. I may leave it until about 3 o'clock this afternoon to start with the silver. :D

Time for another primecoat layer :D (I can do them every 10 minutes or so as it touch dries in 5 minutes according to the can. )

The first coat of silver has gone on, and it looks to be clinging well. Only bummer is I think the can is almost empty. It might be enough to give a brief second coat but I think I might have to hang fire and order some from Skoda - Might go for two cans this time though. :D

Will get pics when I go for the second coat, as my camera battery just died, and is now on charge for a bit. :o

Pic of silver, after 1 coat, I was finding it hard using the aerosol spray as if I got too close I risked getting blobs, and holding it too far away the wind just took it. Going to order two cans now as my one has run out...

planning on doing similar with my cam cover, what primer did you use for it? and did you use anything special on it?

My primer is from "plasticoat" - It's their plastic primer which goes on like a clear liquid. Seems to work well. That coat of silver is pretty thin due to the wind and the paint running out, but it's a good start. Two more coats next saturday, then plenty of lacquer, and I should be able to swap it in time for TRAX.

is your cam cover plastic then?

the 1.8T is alloy.

Yeah Ben his is plastic.

balls!!

Well, having a primer for metal is probably even easier than plastic. ;)

then plenty of lacquer,

won't the lacquer discolour with the heat from the engine ?

Absolutely no idea. :D But I'll make sure it's got enough on there and is bone dry before fitting it. I don't think the cam cover gets all "that" hot - I've never known it to be more than comfortably warm, even after a good run. Most of the heat is in the bottom end and some merely conducts through to the cover.

Are you using high temperature paint for that?

I'd imagine using ordinary stuff would just peel off after a bit of a heat soak.

I'm using Skoda paint.

I'm using Skoda paint.

and that paint is heat resistant then because its Skoda paint

I have not got the foggiest. The cam cover does not really get hot - It definitely never gets to the point where you'd lay your hand flat on it and not be abl to keep it there due to the heat. It is merely "quite warm" due to the conductivity through the block, head, etc. It actually has a rubber insulating layer between the head and it, so insulates it partially. I don't reckon anything will happen, but even if it does....? How the hell is anyone going to find out until someone attempts it?! That person is moi!

my mate painted the cam cover on his 205 turbo which generates a LOT of heat but the paint was fine, never reacted to the heat at all.

p.s. he used normal luminous pink paint!

... How the hell is anyone going to find out until someone attempts it?! That person is moi!

Jason, you truly are a pioneer :D

Jason, you truly are a pikey!! :thumbdwn:

bit harsh that mate.

I put the cam cover under the boat on the drive to keep it dry. Damn wind meant today's heavy rain got it wet, but I'll ensure it's proper dry before adding more coats. Ordered 2 cans of silver from Skoda this morning... along with 1 smoked side indicator lens. Don't ask.. Yes, I currently have 1 smoked, 1 not - bless Ebay. :D

The misquoting engine strikes again!
