Windscreen - when will insurance replace it?

Featured Replies

After giving the screen a good clean inside and out, I noticed one stone chip - cracked comes through the screen (I knew this was here) about 15mm in diameter - and over 20 little chips of less than 2mm, basically just taking a layer of laminate off.

Would Autoglass replace or repair the screen, or just ignore the little chips? Never had the need to deal with glaziers before.

As a side note, I really must stop driving through gravel traps - its not doing my paintwork or windscreen any good ;)

IF there is sufficient damage it will be replaced. Can always run it past a friendly MOT place to see if they'd fail it, if so, you'd arguably be able to get it replaced :)

They will have to replace it if it breaks ;) ;)

Yeah I thought about that :D

If its a chip, your insurance will fix it for free.... If it's (as someone else said) an MOT fail, you'll have to pay your 'glass excess' and have a new screen....

I always assumed you could get a new screen at any time, simply by paying the glass excess and it doesn't need to be an MOT fail?

Chris

newspaper over windscreen and heavy object to hit newspaper ;) or where i use to work "metal pole/sack barrow" brought down hard on windscreen :lol

You can.Just had mine replaced and its only just passed the MOT.

Thanks all  Best get on the phone to insurer+autoglass.

Doubt it'd fail an MOT in its current state, the chips way over to the passengers side and the chips are barely noticeable but I'm still surprised with the number the chips.

Do companies use genuine skoda glass or some crappy replacement screen? Also what happens to the number etched into the screen should they replace it.

Autoglass will only repair 3 chips. More than that is a replace.

Cracks are an auto replace if they exceed the impact zone of the chip.

I have a chip in mine at the bottom in front of the steering wheel. The chip is probably about 3mm wide but hasn't gone all the way through. Any thoughts? I could get a pic up tomoz.
