VRS Front Disks

Featured Replies

Im after a bit of advice if anyone has any to offer. Basically i recently fitted some cheap ish front and rear disks (20 Groove ones off Ebay which after buying i discovered were just QH ones grooved by the seller himself) and within 3k im already experiencing some serious vibration when braking from high speed  so im assuming these are now warped.

Im 99% certain the rears will be fine but im looking at throwing the fronts away and fitting some better ones. I've had a quick look at the Black Diamond Range but wondered if anyone had any experience with these and if they are up to withstanding the higher temperatures without warping. Any other recommendations also considered.

Im running them at present with EBC Green Stuff Pads

Cheers Guys

Hi

Tarox all the way

Front discs for your car

i've got atec contin groove they look ace and with their pads as well stop FAST:)

The majority of your problem will probably be Greenstuff pads rather than the discs IMO.

Have the discs got any dark looking areas on them on either face? The greenstuff have a habit of overheating and depositing pad material onto the disc which is what gives the vibration - it's not so much discs "warping" as much as variation in effective thickness due to the transfer of pad material onto the disc.

If this is the case you may get away with cleaning the discs and fitting different (better) pads.

I don't personally know anyone who has had good experience with greenstuff pads, all have been bad and have got rid of them.

*Edit* LOL :) I just read the link posted by Mike above...

Pads

Several choices here, but most of us seem to be running Ferodo DS2500 pads. Part number for the fronts are FCP590H. Approx

I'm another "nonfan" of Green Stuff. Not heard Rich's "deposits" theory before, but Sarah and I have both heard several completely independant reports of it warping discs.

Also I'd not buy cheap discs for use with performance friction material, cos cheap grooved and/or cross-drilled discs are often made, heat-treated, and then grooved etc, which leaves stress raisers from the machining processes in the discs, causing them to warp when heated. I'm not a machinist myself, but I did study metallurgy at college.

Ken,

I've experienced the effect myself on a couple of occasions on different vehicles, with pads that are too soft for the weight of vehicle or level of use, which results in them overheating. If you measure the disc thickness it varies across the disc surface, which translates into braking vibration, although the disc itself is still straight and not "warped" as such.

In the same circumstances I have also used cheap discs, albeit not grooved or drilled (

Yes Ken, I agree totally. all I was indicating is that a cheap disc in general isn't neccesarily bad (many people don't see it that way), there is no guarantee of getting a better disc just by paying more money :) although obviously there are some very good expensive discs, similarly there are some equally good cheap ones. As you say though, post-heatreatment machining operations will aggravate problems.

Sorted, and we're in agreement then.

Cheers for the help folks. Sounds like its the bin then for the disks and pads.

If i go with the Tarox ones which are the better option G88 or Sport Japan if any of you have tried both. Wont be taking it on any trackdays i'll stick to two wheels for those so only fast road use ?

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Sarah, it was to be our secret............................;) ;) ;):D

And the G88s are 'Shifty' tried and tested as well! What more do you want?!!:D

Steve

Are the G88's better than the Zero 60's?

Would you just use standard discs & pads on the rear(NO track use only road)

I had the G88's fitted to all four wheels to give the same degree of braking, also the grooved system seems to get rid of water, so no delay when braking in the wet, which there seems to be a lot of recently.

The ZeroSixtys are not heat treated

So in effect they will not perform as good as the Tarox

But then the Tarox are not a cheap discs

Highly reccomend the Tarox for anyone who drives hard or does track days

Eh Gerry ;) ooh and Shifty , the only guy who I know to boil the brake fluid

Sarah

Ok I'll make my mind up soon!

When are you next set of offers on Sarah :D

Hi Mate

I doubt we will be doing discounts on the Tarox bits :( sorry

We have had discounts on other bits , but Tarox is already discounted

Sorry

But you can always give me a call and I will have a chat and take your payment with a smile :D
